New Delhi : Prof. Sushant Ghosh and Dr. Misba Afrin from the Centre for Theoretical Physics (CTP), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), have received the IOP Publishing 2025 Top Cited Paper Award (India) in Astrophysics and Astronomy. The honour is given to the top 1% most-cited papers in their subject category. Notably, two of the three awards in India this year have gone to JMI.
Award-Winning Research
The recognition was conferred for two highly cited papers published in The Astrophysical Journal:
- “Tests of Loop Quantum Gravity from the Event Horizon Telescope Results of Sgr A”
- “Testing Horndeski Gravity from EHT Observational Results for Rotating Black Holes.”
Both papers have drawn global attention for advancing the understanding of black holes and testing fundamental theories of gravity.
Prof. Sushant G. Ghosh, Director of CTP and a globally respected researcher in black hole physics and general relativity, has previously received several honours, including the President of India’s Award for Research.
Dr. Misba Afrin, his PhD student and now a National Postdoctoral Fellow at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, has contributed significantly to black hole shadows, gravitational lensing, and gravity testing using Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) data.
This award marks the seventh IOP India award in Astrophysics won by Prof. Ghosh and his collaborators since 2022. Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi congratulated the scholars, stating the achievement reflects JMI’s commitment to research excellence and global scientific impact.
