New Delhi: The Department of Geography, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a Special Public Extension Lecture on ‘Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life' on 29th March 2023. The lecture was part of India’s G20 Presidency celebrations at the university.
As per the official notice, the lecture was delivered by Dr. S.D. Attri, Member- Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas, Government of India. Dr. Attri highlighted the issues and challenges of climate change and its
drivers, particularly for developing countries. weather, climate, or water-related disasters have led to the loss of 115 people and caused damages worth US$ 202 million
on a daily basis respectively. The number of disasters also increased five-fold over the past 50 years. This has largely been attributed to Human-induced climate change.
Speaking of Climate change’s impact on India, Dr. Attri suggested that India is among the 10 most climate-induced disaster-prone areas in the world with nearly 65% of India’s population affected by heat waves, about 60 million people annually affected by floods, 316 million Indians in 225 most vulnerable districts by 2030.
The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sandesh Yadav, D/o Geography, JMI.
