JMI organizes a Sensitization Workshop on ‘Substance Use and De addiction’

New Delhi: The Department of Sociology, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organized a Sensitization Workshop on ‘Substance Use and De-addiction’ on July 12, 2022 in support of Government of India’s Drug De-addiction initiative on “Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs”. It was chaired by the Head of the Department, Prof. Manisha Tripathy Pandey. The Resource person was Dr. Amrita Joshi, a renowned Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and a counselor based in Pune. Dr. Joshi is a doctorate in Psychology from University of Hartford, Connecticut.  

The session began with a brief presentation on substance use and its effect. Dr. Joshi sensitized the students and scholars about the menace of drugs, its types, contributing factors and addiction. The presentation stressed on the role of neurology and of society and personal and supportive strategies to deal with urges. She concluded with a conversation on how to adopt spiritual strategies and bring about systemic changes to create an addiction free society.

The question answer sessions and discussion were very engaging and illuminating. The information pertaining to free Drug Deaddiction and Rehabilitations Centres, and Non- Government Organizations working in Delhi was also shared.

The event was successful as it not only raised awareness but it also sensitized the students regarding addiction. It was well-attended by many faculty members from JMI, research scholars and students from many disciplines.
