- Jamia Millia Islamia concludes a three-day National CRE Workshop focusing on childhood trauma, strength-based approaches and rehabilitation practices.
New Delhi, September 18, 2026: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) successfully concluded a three-day National CRE Workshop on “Healing Childhood Trauma: Strength-Based Approaches and Rehabilitation Practices” on September 17, 2026.
The workshop was organised by the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, JMI, in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Department of Teacher Training & Non-Formal Education (TT&NFE), Faculty of Education, JMI, and the Indian Association of Health, Research, and Welfare (IAHRW). The programme had CRE status from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).
The three-day programme focused on strengthening professional understanding of childhood trauma, its effects and rehabilitation practices. Academicians and professionals participating in the workshop discussed approaches aimed at supporting children who have experienced trauma and strengthening the systems involved in their care.
Valedictory Session
The valedictory session brought together academicians and professionals to reflect on the key learning and insights generated during the programme.
Prof. Jessey Abraham, Professor and former Head & Dean, Faculty of Education, JMI, attended the session as the Chief Guest and delivered the valedictory address.
Prof. Tanuja, Dean, Academic Affairs and Officiating Director, CSSI, JMI, was the Guest of Honour and delivered the concluding address.
The programme also acknowledged the leadership and support of Prof. Mazhar Asif, Vice Chancellor and Chief Patron, and Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar and Patron.
Prof. Bharti Sharma, Hony. Director, Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, delivered the welcome address and played a key role in the organisation of the programme.
Inaugural Session
The workshop began with its inaugural session on September 15, 2026.
Prof. Bharti Sharma, Department of TT & NFE, IASE, JMI, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of strengthening professional understanding of childhood trauma and rehabilitation practices.
This was followed by the inaugural address by Prof. Farah Javed Farooqui, Department of TT & NFE, IASE, JMI. She emphasised the need for greater awareness about childhood trauma and reflected on the historical legacy and educational vision of Jamia Millia Islamia.
Dr. Sunil Saini, Co-Founder, IAHRW, also addressed participants during the inaugural session.
Keynote Address on Childhood Trauma
The keynote address on September 15 was delivered by Prof. Zubair Meenai, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor, Department of Social Work, JMI.
Prof. Meenai discussed the ways in which childhood trauma can manifest through physical and psychological health concerns and noted that its effects may also extend across generations.
He highlighted the roles that parents, caregivers, family members, clinicians, schools and psychologists can play in identifying trauma and developing coordinated responses.
He particularly emphasised that healing requires strengthening the relationship between individuals who have experienced trauma and the people and systems involved in their care.
Workshop Focus
The National CRE Workshop provided a platform for professional discussion around childhood trauma and rehabilitation, with emphasis on strength-based approaches and coordinated support.
The programme concluded with Dr. Etee Bahadur proposing the vote of thanks during the valedictory session, formally bringing the three-day workshop to a close.
The workshop reflects the growing importance of professional awareness, collaborative care and rehabilitation-oriented approaches in addressing the complex effects associated with childhood trauma.
