JMI commemorates Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s 57th Mahaparinirvan Diwas

The celebration of the 67th Mahaparinirvan Diwas was a powerful testament to the lasting legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It created an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity and open dialogue that deeply impacted the university community.

New Delhi :- Dr. K.R. Narayanan Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) paid tributes to Dr B.R. Ambedkar on his 67th Mahaparinirvan Diwas on December 6, 2023. This day marks the death anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, one of the most remarkable personalities of modern India. The event, organized exclusively by the dedicated scholars of the Centre, saw enthusiastic participation from students and scholars from various departments of the university.

A number of intellectually stimulating events marked the commemoration. The event began with an engaging quiz titled "Ambedkar and Beyond," which consisted of twenty-four questions covering various aspects of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's life, his contributions, Indian politics, and literature. The interactive format enabled students to actively engage and participate, and those who displayed exceptional knowledge and insight into the subject matter were acknowledged and recognized.

After the quiz, the event seamlessly shifted into a captivating performance of poetry and stories that revolved around the theme of 'Marginality.' Passionate students came together to share their perspectives on marginality, resulting in a rich tapestry of voices that truly captured the essence of the event.

The most memorable part of the evening was the showing of the thought-provoking movie "The Discreet Charm of Savarnas," which was directed by Rajesh Raajamani. The film explored the intricate topic of casteism, igniting passionate discussions among those in attendance. The subsequent discussion was notable for the exchange of thought-provoking ideas and viewpoints, which added rich insights to the academic setting.

The event concluded with an open discussion titled "What Sustains Caste?" During the discussion, students and scholars thoroughly explored various perspectives on caste in contemporary India. The sharing of different perspectives enhanced the understanding of casteism, leading to a more nuanced discussion within the university community. The importance of making efforts at the micro and individual levels to reduce caste-based discrimination was discussed in the conclusive section of the discussion.

The students who demonstrated exceptional knowledge on the life and legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar were duly rewarded with tokens of appreciation for their exemplary performance in the quiz. A vote of appreciation was given by a scholar from the Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies to all of the attendees, thanking them for their significant efforts as the evening came to an end.
