New Delhi, : Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) celebrated National Anti-Ragging Day on 12th August, 2024, with a special lecture that saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and distinguished guests. The event underscored the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive campus environment, free from the menace of ragging.
The program began with the screening of a video message from Prof. Mohammad Shakeel, Vice-Chancellor of JMI, directed to the entire Jamia community. In his message, Prof. Shakeel emphasized the critical importance of maintaining a campus atmosphere of respect, dignity, and support, urging everyone to actively contribute to eradicating ragging in all its forms.
The Chief Guest, Mrs. Banita Devi Naorem, Income Tax Commissioner of International Taxation and a proud alumnus of Jamia, graced the occasion with her presence. In her address, Mrs. Naorem shared fond memories of her time as a student at Jamia, expressing a deep connection to the institution. She emphasized the pivotal role students play as the future of India, urging them to be confident, self-reliant ("Atmanirbhar"), and to avoid any involvement in ragging, which she described as detrimental to the fabric of student life.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Gaurav Singhal, Vice-President of the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE), delivered a compelling lecture, drawing from his experiences at IIT Kanpur and his extensive work in anti-ragging advocacy. Mr. Singhal provided a thorough overview of the UGC Regulations of 2009, highlighting the legal framework, the severe consequences for those who engage in ragging, and the support mechanisms available for victims. He stressed the importance of creating an environment where all students can thrive without fear or intimidation.
In his welcome address, the Chief Proctor- Prof. Mohd. Shahid Khan extended his gratitude to the guests and participants for their active involvement in the event. He also thanked the university's administration for facilitating the organization of this important lecture on such a sensitive subject, reinforcing the institution's dedication to eradicating ragging.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Prof. Simi Farhat Baseer, Dean of Students Welfare, and Prof. Iqtedar Mohammad Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Languages, along with the Provosts of Boys’ Hostels Prof. Nadim Ahmad and M. Suhaib and members of the proctorial team. The dignitaries on the dais were honored with mementos and saplings as tokens of appreciation and respect.
The program was compared by Dr. Nazia Khan, Assistant Proctor and the vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Nisar Khan, Deputy Proctor who acknowledged the contributions of the speakers and the support of the university in making the event a success.
JMI’s observance of National Anti-Ragging Day served as a strong reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold the values of respect, dignity, and empathy within the academic community.
