JMI celebrates International Day of Girl Child

This was followed by the screening of a documentary film called “Pratibha” which calls for honouring girls’ lives, their human rights, and working together to promote gender equality. The movie made an appeal to protect the girl child and give girls a chance to live and change the world.

New Delhi :- The Department of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), organised a programme on October 11, 2023 to observe and celebrate the International Day of Girl Child. A student led initiative; it began with a quiz on gender dynamics in society. The thought behind the quiz was to engage students on gender issues, raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by girls in India and around the world and expose them to initiatives on gender equality. It saw students participate from not only the Department of Social Work but other departments across JMI.

This was then followed by a discussion on the “Pre-conception & Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994(PCPNDT)” by Dr. Tarannum Siddiqui, Research Assistant at the Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women Studies. It was an interactive session which focused on the provisions of the PCPNDT Act, its relevance, gendered factors for declining sex ratio in India, use of prenatal diagnostic techniques for determination of the sex of the foetus and possible interventions.

This was followed by the screening of a documentary film called “Pratibha” which calls for honouring girls’ lives, their human rights, and working together to promote gender equality. The movie made an appeal to protect the girl child and give girls a chance to live and change the world.

The event was organized through the initiative of the students of the Department of Social Work and steered through the mentoring provided by Dr. Sarika Tomar (Student Advisor), Dr. Hem Borker (Extension Lecture Incharge) and Prof. Neelam Sukhramani (Head of the Department). Mohd. Kamran, student of MA Social Work- Semester I thanked the students for their active participation and the faculty members for the opportunity to organize the event on an extremely vital issue.
