JKLU-NVU MoU for UK Degree Pathways for Design Students in Jaipur
JK Lakshmipat University has partnered with NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY (NTU), a leading university in the UK, to create pathways for students enrolled in Design Studies to pursue International Programs. This collaboration enables design students to pursue part of their undergraduate studies in the UK, with the remainder completed in India. Additionally, students enrolled in the Design Studies Bachelor's Program at JKLU who complete their Bachelor's studies at JKLU can pursue their Master's studies at NTU.
Based on employability statistics, NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY enjoys a high reputation in the UK, providing students with a high level of Industry-linked learning. For Design students, the opportunity to study abroad during the Design portion of their studies allows the students to gain experience in Design teaching in different countries, develop their professional portfolios, and gain exposure to International employers.
In this instance, rather than a generic agreement, a very specific pathway has been defined, providing an opportunity for students enrolled in this program to gain a competitive financial advantage through a fee waiver for admission to NTU.
Three Pathways for Studying in the UK at NTU MoU (2+2, 3+1, and 4+1)
Under the MoU, students at JKLU have three options for academic progression, including design studies in the UK through the MoU partner NTU. For the 2+2 route, students do 2 years of the JKLU bachelor’s degree and 2 more at NTU for a degree in Product Design or Furniture and Product Design. The 3+1 route works the same, but students do 3 years at JKLU and the 4th year at NTU for the same degree. For undergraduate degree options, the academic work completed by students at JKLU before transferring is officially recorded at NTU, and students must meet the requirements of the specific route.
For the 4+1 route, students do the full JKLU bachelor’s degree and become eligible for the NTU one-year master’s degree. The options for the 4+1 route at NTU include postgraduate programs in Products and Furniture Design and Graphic Communication Design, among others. Each route balances time spent at JKLU and NTU differently in line with students’ needs and preferences.
Fee Concessions, Semester Exchange, and University Representatives’ Perspectives
There are many advantages to the JKLU-NTU partnership. One visible benefit is the exclusive tuition fee concession. The international tuition fees at UK universities are extremely high. Therefore, by incorporating a structured reduction into the MOU, a wider range of students can now consider the option. This structured concession is specific to the partnership and cannot be accessed through a direct application.
Dr Vijaysekhar Chellaboina, the Vice-Chancellor of JK Lakshmipat University, shared his views on the significance of the partnership. He mentioned that JKLU’s focus area is to facilitate students with international exposure and education, and this partnership helps to achieve the goal. He further mentioned that international design education and exposure will help the students develop an international career and reach their higher education aspirations.
This partnership provides opportunities for semester exchanges for those students who are eligible. Therefore, students can spend one semester at NTU without having to complete a full progression transfer. NTU focuses on employability and industry-linked education, which will help JKLU students achieve what a domestic education would not provide, enhancing their readiness for specific careers and deepening their education and career.
Admission Requirements and How to Prepare
Students at JKLU pursuing international pathways have to prepare for NTU requirements long before a transfer application is made. This is because NTU has its own rules for admitting students. Good grades at JKLU are an absolute requirement. In addition to grades, NTU considers the portfolio as a design admissions evaluation component, and as such, will conduct a design review similar to the majority of design schools around the world. An interview may also be required.
One of the requirements is an IELTS or another relevant language certification. Students wishing to transfer in the 2nd or 3rd year should plan their IELTS preparation during the 1st year. This would also help in the case of a reassessment. The JKLU-NTU agreement represents a great step forward for design education in Rajasthan. This agreement documents a recognised design education for students wishing to practice design on a global level.
