J&K Announces 13 Day Summer Vacation for Kashmir and Jammu Winter Zone GDCs

The Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department has issued Government Order No. 234-JK(HE) of 2026, officially declaring a 13-day annual summer break for specific Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) due to rising seasonal temperatures. Scheduled to run from July 21 to August 2, 2026, the mandate applies strictly to all public colleges across the Kashmir Division and the designated Winter Zone areas of the Jammu Division. While standard academic lectures will remain suspended throughout the recess, institutional facilities will handle essential administrative files and admission workloads, with a full resumption of regular semester classes slated for August 3, 2026.

The Jammu and Kashmir government have issued a brand new notification regarding the upcoming holidays for students in higher education. On July 14, 2026, the Higher Education Department officially announced the annual summer break for Government Degree Colleges (GDCs). This decision was taken to give relief to everyone because of the rising temperature during this peak summer season.

The official notification came out under the Government Order No. 234-JK(HE) of 2026. The order is issued by the Commissioner Secretary of the Higher Education Department, and the copies has been sent to all the college principals and departments so that everyone can follow the rules properly. Vacation Dates and Covered Divisions Under the New Order : 

According to this latest order, the summer vacation is scheduled to start from **July 21, 2026** and it will go on till **August 2, 2026**. This means the colleges will observe a total of 13 days of summer break. This holiday order is not for all colleges in the Union Territory, but it targets specific regions that experiences different weather conditions.

The order clearly states that the vacation is applicable for all Government Degree Colleges which falls under the Kashmir Division. Also, the colleges that falls under the Winter Zone areas of the Jammu Division will observe these holidays during the same dates. For other areas like the Summer Zone of Jammu, they already had their holidays earlier in the year, so this order does not apply to them.

What Happens to Administrative Work and Examinations During Holidays? 

The notification makes it clear that all the regular academic classes and teaching work will stay stopped during these thirteen days. Students does not need to go to college for regular lectures. However, this does not mean that the whole college campus will remain locked completely.

The government have clarified that if there are any essential administrative works that cannot be delayed, the college staff will have to finish them. This work must be done in accordance with the department rules. Non-teaching staff and office employees might still need to handle emergency office files or university admission processes if the college administration calls them.

Preparation for College Reopening and Post-Vacation Activities : 

Once the summer break gets over on August 2, 2026, all academic institutions is expected to resume their normal schedule from August 3, 2026. The department have instructed the college heads to make sure that the classes starts again smoothly without any delay.

Many colleges has planned their internal exams and semester activities right after the reopening. Therefore, students are advised to keep studying a bit during the vacation so they do not face problems when college opens. The teachers will also prepare their pending lecture files and practical notes during this time so that they can cover the remaining syllabus quickly.
