Special Campaign 6.0 Promotes Responsible Management of Electronic Waste

From October 2 to October 31, 2026, several government agencies will implement Special Campaign 6.0 to achieve cleanliness and reduce backlogs in their offices while effectively managing records, e-waste, and other wastes. The campaign is coordinated by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).

The campaign has been adopted by the Department of School Education and Literacy to raise awareness and sensitize members of the school community on environmental protection. Some of the activities include handing over collected e-waste to authorized recyclers or refurbishers, conducting awareness activities during morning assemblies, and rewarding participants of an e-waste quiz.

The campaign promotes a shared responsibility for waste management, as opposed to limiting it to government agencies and recycling companies. Schools have an important role, in conjunction with families, in molding children and shaping the attitudes of the community to practice waste management responsibility.

Handing over e-waste to authorized recyclers or refurbishers is essential since collection of e-waste is only the first step. Evidence of appropriate downstream management will show that discarded e-equipment is diverted to waste electronics and electrical equipment (WEEE) recycling, recovery and refurbishment.

Special Campaign 6.0 Highlights Responsible Disposal of Electronic Waste

Special Campaign 6.0 is a government-wide effort from October 2 to 31, 2026, led by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG). This campaign focuses on cleanliness, reduction of the pendency of work in Government offices, improved records management and effective collection, segregation and disposal of e-waste.

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has utilized this campaign to create awareness about environment among school communities. On October 28, DSEL conducted the handing over of collected e-waste to authorised recyclers/refurbishers, and conducted awareness activities and a quiz in the morning assembly, and rewarded participants of e-waste quiz.

Waste management should be a concern of everyone and not just the Government and Recycling companies. Schools can initiate children to practice these behaviours and families and communities can reinforce these practices at home.

It is important that e-waste is handed over to an authorised recycler/refurbisher. Collection of e-waste is only one aspect of the process and the rest lies with the authorised recycler/refurbisher.

The Importance of E-Waste Recycling for Students

From electronic toys to laptops and phones, nearly all students use various types of electronic devices on a daily basis. Easy access to such devices creates little incentive to consider proper means of disposal when these devices are discarded. As a result, electronic devices can accumulate in homes, schools and workplaces.

Effective management of electronic devices can help recover valuable materials and reduce the pollution caused by unnecessary disposal. It promotes consideration for the impact of products purchased and discarded on the environment.

Students can practice environmental education offered in the classroom through eco-clubs, as part of Mission LiFE. Several fun activities (i.e., quizzes, assemblies, drives) can help students learn about segregation of waste, reuse and recycling.

Developing environmental awareness and cultivating citizenship values are key to the work of Eco-Clubs. During the webinar on e-waste and solid waste management held by DoSEL in September 2026, several participants appreciated the importance of engaging students in the consideration of the life cycle of materials, including the recycling of e-waste, safe management of waste and the conservation of resources.

How it Corroborates With NEP 2020 and Mission LiFE

Reforming the school curriculum (as defined by the National Education Policy 2020) prioritizes environmental education to instill awareness and responsibility in students. Through environmental activities, students can connect values to practical problems surrounding their communities.

Mission LiFE focuses on reinforcing lifestyle changes toward conservation of the environment. School campaigns can help establish these changes, especially decreasing waste and responsible disposal of electronic devices.
