Jamia Millia Islamia and NDC Celebrate National Public Health Dentistry Day 2026 with Oral Health Awareness Campaign

The year 2026 saw the Faculty of Dentistry at Jamia Millia Islamia, in conjunction with the National Dental Commission, host several awareness-raising activities for the general public on oral health and the establishment of a screening camp in New Delhi.

New Delhi, June 19, 2026: The Faculty of Dentistry at Jamia Millia Islamia, in association with the National Dental Commission (NDC), commemorated National Public Health Dentistry Day on 19 June 2026, at NDC, RK Puram, New Delhi. The NDC is the newly created regulatory authority of the Government of India that has taken the place of the Dental Council of India to regulate the dental profession in India.

Keeping in view that oral health is essential for the improvement of health and well-being, the theme of the event was “Healthy Mouth, Healthy Communities, Healthy Nation.” It focused on the importance of oral health for the development of healthy communities across the nation. The event was honored by the presence of Dr. Sanjay Tiwari, Chairperson of NDC, and Dr. Chandrashekhar Janakiram, President of the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Dental Education Board. The speakers in the event emphasized the role of Public Health Dentistry in the advancement of community oral health and the reduction of oral health inequity, and the need for preventive oral health care in the country.

They commended the Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, for their community oral health initiatives. As a Faculty of one of the premier central universities of India, Jamia Millia Islamia, the Faculty of Dentistry has pledged itself to the promotion of oral health through teaching and research.In a message, Prof. Nadeem Yunus, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, JMI, expressed that the Faculty's commitment to developing community oral health continues to build on education, research, and the delivery of and engagement in services. He noted that while oral health is part of overall health, the Faculty will continue its community outreach to raise awareness of the need for prevention of oral health diseases and to promote access to oral health services. He further expressed his good wishes for the successful implementation of the activity and commended the National Dental Commission and the Faculty of Dentistry for their collaboration in public oral health.

Prof. Abhishek Mehta delivered an interactive session to teach the importance of disease prevention and the value of healthy diets and good oral hygiene, along with regular attendance at the dentist. The session aimed at encouraging participants to take responsibility for the oral health of themselves and their families ' oral health, and to understand the impact of oral health on the overall health of the body. In commemoration, an Oral Health Screening camp was held for the Officials and Staff of the National Dental Commission. Around a hundred people were screened, had an examination of their oral health, and were given disease prevention counselling along with advice on oral health hygiene and the importance of timely visits to the dentist.

Individuals who needed additional treatment were referred for follow-up as needed. With the help of the Faculty of Dentistry, including full-time faculty, interns, and support staff, the oral health screening camp and education sessions were organized. The program was a success and demonstrated a need for preventive oral healthcare, and that an emphasis on community oral health is a team-based effort.
