Discuss Implementation of NEP-2020 at Jamia Millia Islamia’s 105th Foundation Day

New Delhi,:  Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) marked its 105th Foundation Day with a thought-provoking panel discussion on the “Prospects of NEP-2020”, organised by the Department of Social Work as part of the annual S.R. Mohsini Memorial Lecture Series. The distinguished panel featured Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, NETF, NBA, NIRF & EC NAAC; Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, Former Chairman, UGC and Former Vice-Chancellor, JNU; and Prof. D.P. Agrawal, Former Chairman, UPSC. The session was held in the presence of Prof. Mazhar Asif, Vice Chancellor, JMI, and Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Registrar, JMI.

The event commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran and the Jamia Tarana, setting a solemn tone for the day. In his welcome address, Prof. Rizvi highlighted the importance of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in education, asserting that the NEP-2020 recognizes the richness of India’s cultural and linguistic diversity.

Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar emphasized the NEP’s focus on imagination, inquiry, and multidisciplinary research, stating that “the best time to implement NEP is now.” He advocated for integrating research at the undergraduate level to unleash the innovative potential of India’s youth.

Prof. D.P. Agrawal discussed the crucial role of teachers in driving NEP implementation, stressing continuous reskilling and flexibility in learning. “Teachers are the real driving force of NEP-2020,” he said, underscoring the need for lifelong learning and value-based education.

Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe commended JMI’s century-long journey and its alignment with NEP’s vision of interdisciplinarity. He called for greater access to research facilities, innovation ecosystems, and active teacher engagement, remarking that “teachers must be friends, philosophers, and mentors to students.”

Prof. Mini Shaji Thomas, Chairperson, NEP Apex Committee, JMI, presented “Nai Taleem to NEP: A Transformational Journey from 1920–2020 and Beyond”, drawing parallels between Gandhian educational principles and the NEP framework. She showcased JMI’s progress in implementing the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme, Multiple Entry-Exit System, and Academic Bank of Credits.

Delivering the presidential address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif reaffirmed JMI’s commitment to fulfilling the vision of NEP-2020 and the national goal of holistic, skill-based education. He added that every Jamia student graduates with at least one vocational skill, reflecting the university’s Gandhian ethos.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. R.R. Patil, Head, Department of Social Work, and the release of the department’s Placement Brochure. Earlier in the day, a Book Exhibition titled “Celebrating Founders and Jamia Authors” was inaugurated by the Dr. Zakir Husain Library as part of the Foundation Day celebrations.
