Jamia Millia Islamia Library Expands New Reading Halls with Midnight Hours
New reading halls are open to students at the library, allowing students to read and study late into the night at the Jamia Millia Islamia Library. This past summer, improvements were made to the reading halls and library hours more accommodating to students. Reading halls were enlarged, and new reading halls were built to help with library congestion.
Dr. Zakir Husain Library reading halls were acknowledged for their improvements by Vice Chancellor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi on July 14, 2023. Accompanying them were University Librarian Vikas Nagrale and faculty members and students of the campus.
What has changed?
Two new reading halls have a combined seating capacity of 400. One reading hall is dedicated to the use of research scholars and students of the postgraduate programs. This reading hall has a seating capacity of 250. The halls are furnished ergonomically and have improved ventilation and lighting.
New Reading Hall Hours
Postgraduate reading halls will now stay open until midnight, every day of the week, while the library will remain closed. This is a significant change to the library hours, especially on the weekend.
Why is the University framing this as more than furniture?
At the inauguration, Vice-Chancellor Asif described libraries as using more than just reading and reference. He described libraries as spaces for collaboration and academic and intellectual discourse and development. He also described the administration's drive to build academic infrastructure and the role modern libraries play in building a genuine research culture on campus. Registrar Rizvi, in turn, described the role of libraries in the academic life of any institution, and the move as a sign of the administration's commitment to investing in resources that benefit the students. University Librarian Nagrale described the upgraded spaces as more than modern, describing them as aligned and supportive of the needs of the University community.
Why does this matter for the students?
For a University like this one, with a large community of postgraduate and doctoral students, a library that closes at 8 pm versus one that closes at midnight or 2 am as it used to, is a significant difference. It impacts how thesis chapters are written, how exam prep is scheduled, and how much of campus life is done after hours, as opposed to before closing.
The development is also part of a greater trend across Indian University services and research, where library infrastructure is seen as a competitive rather than a supportive service.

Final Thoughts
New or renovated libraries are rarely seen in the news. But for a campus community working on deadlines for research or theses, this news is immediately relevant. Due to JMI's investment in library infrastructure, we now have 400 extra seats and halls open till midnight.
JMI's investment shows that library infrastructure does not have to be doubtlessly important to be significant. More seats and more hours mean one less excuse to not finish a chapter.
