New Delhi : In a significant step toward broadening access to English-medium education, the Delhi government has directed all its schools to introduce at least one English-medium section in every class starting from the current academic year. The move, announced by the Directorate of Education (DoE), aims to strengthen students’ academic foundations, particularly for those aspiring to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and research.
According to an official circular issued on Tuesday, all Delhi government schools must ensure that subjects in these designated sections are taught exclusively in English, except for regional language subjects. Admission to these English-medium sections will be based on students’ interest and academic aptitude.
The directive builds on earlier policy initiatives introduced in 2014 and 2018, and represents a more structured push toward bilingual academic environments in government schools.
To support the rollout, school heads have been instructed to make adequate arrangements for English-language teaching and learning resources. Schools must also update all relevant records, including entries on the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) portal, to reflect the medium of instruction.
The transition will be implemented in a phased manner, eventually covering classes up to Class 12. District and zonal education officials have been tasked with regular monitoring and providing assistance to ensure smooth implementation.
This policy marks a major shift in the Delhi government’s education strategy, aligning public school offerings more closely with national and global academic standards
