IIT Jammu Announces RISE UP 2026: A Golden Opportunity for Aspiring Researchers to Work with Top Faculty

Indian Institute of Technology Jammu launches RISE-UP 2026, an offline research internship offering hands-on experience, faculty mentorship, and stipends for students in science and engineering fields.

JAMMU, March 23– The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu has officially opened its doors to the next generation of scientists and engineers by announcing the launch of RISE-UP 2026. This prestigious Research Internship in Sciences and Engineering is designed to foster a deep-rooted research culture among undergraduate students across India. As the academic world increasingly shifts toward practical, hands-on experience, IIT Jammu’s latest initiative offers a unique platform for students to step out of the classroom and into state-of-the-art laboratories.

RISE-UP stands for Research Internship in Sciences and Engineering – An Undergraduate Program. Unlike many virtual programs that became common in recent years, RISE-UP 2026 is a fully offline program. Selected interns will be required to be physically present at the IIT Jammu campus, located in the scenic region of Jagti, to collaborate directly with the institute's esteemed faculty. The primary goal of the program is to develop a robust research ecosystem. By working on real-world technical challenges, students will gain insights that go far beyond theoretical textbooks. The program is scheduled to run between May and July 2026, providing a productive way for students to spend their summer break.

The internship is not limited to IIT students, as it specifically targets talent from other institutions. The eligibility criteria include:

  • Pre-final year undergraduate students.
  • Postgraduate students from institutions other than IIT Jammu.
  • Candidates with a strong foundation in programming or technical skills, who will be given preference during the selection process.

The institute is looking for students who are not just academically bright but also possess the technical documentation and interest to back up their research goals.

The internship offers flexibility in duration, ranging from four to eight weeks. While the minimum commitment is four weeks, there is a significant incentive for those who stay longer. Students who complete the full eight-week duration are eligible for a stipend, providing both financial support and academic enrichment.

During their stay, interns will:

  1. Work Directly with Faculty: Interns are selected by specific faculty members to work alongside them on active projects.
  2. Access Advanced Facilities: Students will have access to IIT Jammu’s cutting-edge research facilities and state-of-the-art laboratories.
  3. Develop Technical Skills: The program focuses on active project work rather than classroom instruction, ensuring students leave with practical, marketable skills.
  4. Tackle Real-World Problems: Projects are designed to engage with contemporary issues in science and engineering.

IIT Jammu boasts a wide array of departments that will likely host these interns. These include Biosciences and Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Materials Engineering, among others. There are also opportunities in Humanities and Social Sciences, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to innovation.

For students eager to participate, the clock is ticking. The application portal is set to go live on March 26, 2026, and will remain open until April 10, 2026, at 11:59 pm.

Here is how interested candidates should prepare:

1. Candidates should gather their academic credentials and documentation of technical expertise. A critical component of the application is a compelling statement of research interest, where students explain why they want to join the program and what they hope to achieve. Additionally, the institute requires specific forms such as a Bonafide Certificate, a Parental Declaration, and a Hostel/Mess Form.

2. Once the link is live on the official IIT Jammu website and social media handles, users must register using a valid personal email address. Note that this email cannot be changed later, so it is vital to use an address you check regularly.

3. The institute has issued a clear warning: once an application is submitted, it cannot be edited. Applicants are advised to review every detail carefully before hitting the final submit button. To avoid technical glitches caused by last-minute traffic, the institute recommends starting the process well before the April 10 deadline.

The introduction of RISE-UP 2026 comes at a time when practical research experience is becoming a key differentiator for students entering the job market or applying for higher studies. Programs like this help bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements. IIT Jammu’s initiative is part of a broader trend in Indian higher education toward nurturing a strong research culture. By inviting students from outside its own campus, IIT Jammu is contributing to the national pool of scientific talent, allowing students from various backgrounds to experience the rigor and resources of an IIT.
