:- RV University and Rotary jointly organized an International Conference on Peace, Conflict Prevention and Resolution

 

Bangalore: Expressing serious concern over the mindless death, destruction and population displacement from Ukraine, experts from around the world called for addressing root causes of conflict and resolving issues through dialogue and diplomacy.

They were participating in an international conference on peace and conflict prevention and resolution organized by the RV University in partnership with Rotary recently.

The objective of the conference was to highlight the contemporary challenges to peace and identify practical solutions and strategies in the area of conflict prevention and resolution.

The panel deliberated upon what role schools and higher education institutions can play together and individually to teach the students the values, skills and attitudes that can allow them to be responsible citizens and cater to the collective good of society. The second panel explored the role of rights-based approaches, truth commissions, women and children, and the international community

Dr. Y.S.R Murthy, Vice-Chancellor, RV University said. “Cyber warfare and lethal Autonomous weapons like killer robots have immense potential to derail international peace and security. There are serious gaps in the international legal framework and International Humanitarian Law to handle these emerging challenges.” He stressed that education and mass media can play an important role in building a culture of peace.

Former Head of "Peace and Security" Section, United Nations University, Tokyo, Professor Vesselin Popovski, referring to the conflict resolution Strategies underlined the need to learn the causes, clarify the historical positions, bring parties together to talk and enable them to identify a solution by themselves, monitor and follow up.

The discussion saw participation from eminent experts from the civil society as well as career diplomats working with the United Nations. Experts from the United Nations, Human Rights Alert, Manipur and HAQ Centre for Child Rights addressed it.
