ABVP has expressed concerns about the delay in the INSPIRE SHE notification
Every year, thousands of students hoping to gain the INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education, or INSPIRE SHE, have been disappointed by the notification not being posted. Now, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has entered the issue. The organization has reported that the delay of the 2025/26 notification is unjust, and the Department of Science and Technology needs to provide a solution to this delay that won’t cost students a lot more than bureaucratic paperwork.
Typically, the INSPIRE SHE notification is posted between September and October. This year, that timeframe has passed with no notification, and understandably so, students are anxious.
What are the statements made by ABVP?
ABVP posted an official statement on the situation and expressed that the lack of a notification is concerning and has caused anxiety and uncertainty for students that rely upon this scholarship in order to continue their education. The national leadership of ABVP has stated that the lack of a notification should not postpone the aspirations of thousands of young students who wish to become scientists, and urged the DST to take immediate action for the benefit of students.
Besides notification, ABVP provided additional concerns that pertained to the delays in the disbursement of scholarship funds that are due to current INSPIRE SHE beneficiaries. The lack of scholarship funds and disbursement delays have caused students to become financially stressed and resulted in the inability to proceed with research.
An RTI Reply That Confirmed Student Fears
The extent of the delay was more understandable after an unusual development. A BSc student from Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, lodged an RTI application in the DST around the middle of March, inquiring about the status of the INSPIRE SHE 2025 notification. The reply in the middle of April was curt. The department confirmed that the announcement of the INSPIRE SHE-2025 would not take place.
This single line, which was later on covered by national news, confirmed what students from all over the country had already begun to suspect: that the current cycle would not just be late, but that the current cycle would not be run at all.
Why this scholarship is so important
INSPIRE SHE is not a small scheme. It offers a scholarship as well as a mentorship grant to support the development of research in the early stage to students who are meritorious and who are pursuing bachelor's and integrated postgraduate courses in the natural and basic sciences. This scholarship, especially for students who come from small towns and have lower socioeconomic backgrounds, is often the deciding factor between pursuing a degree in the sciences or a degree that is less risky financially.
Any interruption to this scholarship does not just inconvenience a student. It impacts the long-term goal of creating a solid base of young researchers in the sciences that the government has focused on, especially on improving the research ecosystem of the country.
Where Things Stand Now
In parliament, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister, has continued to say that the government supports the youth of the country and the young scientists through the INSPIRE scheme and various other ways. However, to date, no new dated notification for the 2025-26 SHE cycle has been issued. Hence, students have had to turn to updates on the official INSPIRE portal and answer RTIs, rather than a formal announcement.
Due to how directly ABVP's statement and the RTI reply coincide, the department is expected to face increased pressure to clarify the scheme's status for the current academic year.
What Affected Students Can Do
- Keep checking the INSPIRE portal online-inspire.gov.in for notice board updates
- Keep proof of your Class 12 board results and prior year applications in case a delayed notification is issued with a short time frame
- The students facing issues with pending disbursement should try to raise the issue through their institutional nodal officers, and not just wait for a portal update
- For updates on the scheme, use verified educational news sources, and do not believe unverified updates on social media.
Final Thoughts
Although externally, a late scholarship notification may appear to be a small administrative issue, for many students, it leads to postponed enrollment decisions, disrupted research, and increased financial stress. ABVP making this issue public is an attempt to pile on pressure on the DST to provide clarification about the scheme's status. However, in the absence of immediate official notification, students should keep documentation prepared and be alert to updates, presuming the scheme hasn't ended.
