Gandhinagar - Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN) has introduced an innovative interactive gaming project titled "Circular Testris", developed at its Centre for Creative Learning (CCL). The new version reimagines the popular video game Tetris by placing physical movement at the center of gameplay.
Unlike convetional Tetris, where players remain seated and Control the game using buttons, Circular Testris fixes the game at the centre and requires players to physically move around it. This design encourages bodiky movement and tranforms gaming into an active, immersive experience.
The project was developed in collaboration with interns from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), reflecting IIT Gandhinagar’s focus on creative learning, hands-on exploration, and playful experimentation.
Explaining the concept, Manish Jain, Teaching Professor and Principal Coordinator at CCL, said the team explored what would happen if the player had to move instead of the game. The result is a simple yet thought-proviking design that promotes awareness, engagement and physical activity.
While not positioned as a fitness tool, Circular Testris challenges passive screen habits and invites users to interact with digital games in a more physical and mindful. Educators and researchers have noted that such innovations can spark discussions on screen time, attention and learning in a increasingly digital world.
The experiment has gained attention for its originality and minimalistic design, demonstrating how familiar games can be redesigned to create entirely new user experiences. IIT Gandhinagar stated that the project highlights how small design changes can offer fresh perspectives on everyday technology.
