Ministry of Education Pushes Indian Knowledge Systems with New Research and Academic Programs and Skills Training
The Indian Government has made Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) an integral part of the Indian higher education system. The goal is to connect students to the long history of scholarship in India. IKS has the potential to integrate students with contemporary research and scholarship. Information provided by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, has stated that the scope of the initiative has expanded significantly through the implementation of dedicated research centers, interdisciplinary academic projects, formal academic courses, workshops, and internship programs.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader objective of valorizing Indian traditional knowledge systems while promoting new knowledge, research, and active participation in multidisciplinary tasks. Through the introduction of Indian Knowledge Systems in universities and higher education institutes, policymakers strive to relate the ancient Indian knowledge systems to the contemporary socio-technological challenges.
91 IKS Research and Knowledge Preservation Centers Established
As part of the ongoing national initiative, 91 Indian Knowledge Systems Centers have been set up in various Institutions of Higher Education. The Centers are committed to conducting primary research, documenting, teaching, and promoting the various Indian Languages and the different Knowledge Traditions of India.
The Centers will also promote research that is grounded in the Indian heritage of scholarship and will encourage the preservation and digitization of traditional manuscripts. The Centers will also promote collaborative research among scholars of Philosophy, Linguistics, Literature, Science, Technology, and other allied fields.
124 IKS Courses Span Multiple Disciplines
The Ministry of Education introduced 124 courses on Indian Knowledge Systems at 12 higher education institutions.
Recognizing the need for curricula beyond just history or culture, the courses include:
- Mathematics
- Astronomy
- Logic
- Health sciences
- Aesthetics
- Management
This multidisciplinary approach illustrates how Indian traditional knowledge has been and can continue to be relevant to the various fields of learning and complementary to the modern education system.
100+ Interdisciplinary Research Projects
The Indian Knowledge Systems initiative has propelled academia with 102 new interdisciplinary projects that focus on the ancient Indian scientific tradition. Current research projects include:
- Metallurgy
- Chemistry
- Town planning
- Traditional methods of science
The project aims to study past knowledge within the framework of current research and create possibilities for evidence-based research linking ancient practices with modern methods of science.
Student Engagement through Workshops and Internships
To create a higher degree of academic engagement, the Ministry has organized over 50 workshops at national and international conferences. Researchers, educators, and policymakers have been able to discuss the position of Indian Knowledge Systems within contemporary education and prospective lines of funding for research.
Practical engagement for students has also increased. The Ministry claims 5,527 internships have been rolled out within the Indian Knowledge Systems initiative. These internships have provided students with opportunities to undertake research and document related academic projects.
The growth of IKS shows the government's endeavor to embed traditional knowledge limitations of India into advanced studies. The amalgamation of research, academic programs, and interdisciplinary projects and the inclusion of students, is aimed to build cultural awareness while fostering innovative practices from the historical knowledge systems of India.
