India Becomes the Most Represented Country in THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026

India leads globally with 88 institutions in the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026, with Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences securing the top position among Indian universities.

India has emerged as the most represented country in the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR) 2026, with 88 institutions making it to the global list. The ISR 2026 evaluated 911 universities across 94 countries, showing a significant rise from 749 in its first edition.

Despite the continued absence of premier institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, which have chosen to boycott THE rankings, several Indian universities have achieved strong positions. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences leads the national chart, securing the 57th position globally. VIT University follows closely at rank 59, while Anna University has earned a joint 67th rank. Among central universities, Jamia Millia Islamia is the highest performer at rank 80. SRM Institute of Science and Technology at rank 89 and Amity University, Noida at rank 97 have also placed within the global top 100.

The Times Higher Education rankings are conducted annually in partnership with Schmidt Science Fellows and aim to assess how effectively universities promote interdisciplinary research. The 2026 edition has expanded its definition of interdisciplinary science to include collaborations that integrate STEM disciplines with non-STEM fields such as law, economics, social sciences, education, and clinical health
