India To Move Toward Becoming a Global Education Hub as Foreign Universities Eye Campus Expansion

Policy reforms and international collaborations are reshaping India’s higher education landscape. Experts say rising foreign student numbers and new campus policies could position India as a major global education destination.

New Delhi: India is gradually positioning itself as a global hub for higher education as new policies make it easier for foreign universities to establish campuses in the country. The move is aimed at expanding international collaboration and offering global academic opportunities within India’s borders. Policy changes have already attracted interest from several international institutions, with some preparing to launch campuses or academic partnerships across different Indian states.

The strategy is also expected to increase the number of international students studying in India. A recent global student mobility report estimates that foreign student enrolments in India could grow by about 8% annually through 2030, reflecting rising global interest in Indian institutions and lower education costs compared to many Western destinations.

Government initiatives such as the Study in India programme and reforms aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 are intended to strengthen academic standards and global partnerships. These measures are designed not only to attract foreign students but also to reduce the need for Indian students to pursue higher education abroad by bringing international institutions and programmes to India.

Education experts note that the expansion of foreign campuses, combined with growing international student inflows and academic partnerships, could transform India’s higher education ecosystem in the coming decade. If the current trends continue, the country could emerge as one of the world’s key destinations for international education by the end of the decade.
