NEW DELHI, In a major initiative to bolster technical expertise in the burgeoning space sector, the India Space Academy (ISA) has officially announced a specialized six-day online training program titled "AI & ML in Space Exploration" which is scheduled to take palce from February 23 to February 28, 2026, this comprehensive next gen workshop is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and the practical demands of modern space missions. Participants in this program gain significant advantages that align with national goals like Skill India and the National Education Policy 2020. The curriculum is designed to enhance technical knowledge and practical skills, offering hands-on experience through project-based learning and exposure to AI-driven innovations. Successful completion grants participants an official Training Completion Certificate, while those who finish project work receive a Project Completion Letter and an Evaluation Report to bolster their professional portfolios. Beyond technical growth, the program fosters critical 21st-century skills such as scientific temperament, data analysis, and problem-solving.
The India Space Academy operates as an academic institution under the Department of Space Education of India Space Week. As an autonomous body supported by central and state governments, it was established to promote space education and employment opportunities among students, teachers, and researchers. The academy holds the distinction of being the first organization in India to establish both online and offline space educational portals, providing certification to trainees from over 1,500 universities and colleges across the nation.
The program emerges as part of a broader vision for "Viksit Bharat" and aligns with national reforms aimed at strengthening India's role in the global space industry and exploration. As space missions become increasingly complex, the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) has transitioned from experimental to essential. These technologies are now critical for managing the massive data volumes generated by advanced sensors and for developing the autonomous systems required for future deep-space endeavors. The training is structured to provide a logical progression from foundational concepts to advanced practical applications. Participants will begin with the Foundations of AI & ML in Space on the first day, followed by specialized sessions on Space Exploration & Robotics and Satellite Operations. The latter half of the week will delve into Spacecraft Systems & Autonomy and Space Data Analysis & Pattern Recognition, culminating in a final day dedicated to Advanced Applications and Case Studies. The academy's educational initiatives are deeply rooted in the annual India Space Week celebrations held from August 12 to 18, which honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the founder of the Indian space program. While India Space Week was established as a broader public awareness event, specialized training modules like the AI and ML program have evolved to meet modern industry demands for advanced technical skills. These efforts gained notable recognition when Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated the academy's work in promoting scientific literacy during his August 2024 Mann Ki Baat address.
The academy has opened eligibility to a wide range of participants, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, faculty members, research scholars, and general space enthusiasts. The sessions are scheduled daily from 05:00 pm to 07:00 pm via Zoom online meeting platform, allowing participants to join from across the country. A non-refundable tuition fee of ₹1200 per participant is required for registration, which remains open until February 21, 2026. Upon successful completion, all attendees will receive an official Training Completion Certificate.
