IIT Tirupati has opened the online application process for admission to its M.S. (Research) programmes for the January 2027 admission cycle. Candidates interested in pursuing research at the institute can submit their applications through the online admission portal.
The application window opened on September 21, 2026, at 11 AM and will remain open until October 12, 2026, up to 5 PM. The dates for the written test/interview, announcement of results, campus reporting and orientation programme will be announced later.

IIT Tirupati M.S. Research Admission: Application Fee
Candidates applying for the M.S. (Research) programme are required to pay a non-refundable application fee. The fee structure is:

GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL Male candidates: ₹400
-
GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL Female candidates: ₹200
-
SC/ST/PwD candidates: ₹200
Candidates are advised to retain the payment reference number after completing the transaction.
Applicants can apply to more than one division across departments, but they can apply to a maximum of three divisions.
IIT Tirupati M.S. Research Eligibility Criteria
Candidates seeking admission to the M.S. (Research) programme must meet the prescribed academic requirements.
Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology or a four-year BS degree, or a relevant Master's degree such as M.Sc. or MCA, along with a valid GATE score, are eligible to apply.
Candidates with a relevant four-year online Bachelor's degree from a recognised university and a valid GATE score can also apply.
Candidates who have completed the required examinations of certain professional bodies, including the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Institute of Electronics and Tele-Communication Engineering, may also be eligible if they satisfy the prescribed requirements and possess a valid GATE score.
IIT Graduates
Candidates holding a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology from an IIT with an exceptionally good academic record can apply without a GATE score if they meet the prescribed CGPA requirement.
The minimum CGPA requirement is:

8/10 for general candidates

7.5/10 for EWS/OBC-NCL candidates

7.0/10 for SC/ST/PwD candidates
A valid GATE score is not required for candidates applying under the External, Part-Time, Internal or IIT Tirupati Project Staff categories.
Different Categories of M.S. Research Admission
IIT Tirupati offers M.S. (Research) admissions through both HTRA and Non-HTRA categories.
HTRA Category
The HTRA category includes:

Regular: Full-time research scholars who may receive assistantship through applicable schemes.

Regular-Fellowship: Scholars supported by external fellowship agencies such as UGC, CSIR and PMRF.
Non-HTRA Category
The Non-HTRA category includes External, Part-Time and Internal candidates, along with M.S. (Research) admissions through projects for eligible IIT Tirupati project staff.
External Category
Candidates applying under the External category must be regular employees with at least two years of professional experience as of the application deadline.
They must be sponsored by and employed in an industry, organisation or national laboratory with R&D facilities and recognised by the prescribed authorities or having an MoU with IIT Tirupati.
Research under this category may be carried out partly or fully at the candidate's parent organisation under the supervision of an IIT Tirupati faculty member and a co-supervisor from the parent organisation.
Part-Time Category
For the Part-Time category, candidates must be employed in an industry, organisation or institution located within commutable distance of IIT Tirupati.
They must also have at least two years of professional experience as of the last date of application.
The minimum residential requirement for M.S. (Research) scholars under the External and Part-Time categories is one semester.
Internal Category
The Internal category is applicable to regular employees of IIT Tirupati.
Applicants must have at least two years of experience as a regular IIT Tirupati employee as of the last date of application.
M.S. Through Project Category
Eligible candidates already working on a project administered by the Centre for Sponsored Research and Consultancy (CSRC) at IIT Tirupati can apply under the M.S. (Research) through Project category.
Candidates must have at least two months of experience on the project at IIT Tirupati as of the last date of application.
A valid GATE score is not required for candidates applying under this category.
Statement of Purpose Mandatory
Candidates applying for the M.S. (Research) programme must upload a Statement of Purpose (SoP) with their online application. The SoP is mandatory for all departments.
Applicants should also select their preferred research areas through the online admission portal according to the availability under the respective category or scheme.
