IIT Roorkee Joins Hands with SkyySkill Academy to Introduce EV Technology Course for Engineers and Professionals
Marking a significant step to fill India's electric mobility skill gap, on 20th May 20226, the Electronics and ICT Academy (E&ICT Academy) at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SkyySkill Academy to offer advanced and short certification courses on Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology.
Targeting engineering graduates, diploma holders, and professionals, the collaboration aims to assist individuals in developing specialised, job-related skill sets in this growing vertical of the Indian automobile industry. The course is designed to provide ample exposure to practical labs, online teaching modules, guided assignments, and real-world EV-related projects.
Explaining the rationale for the collaboration, Prof. Sanjeev Manhas, Chief Investigator, E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee, noted the need to address an emerging sector and the importance of integrating practical knowledge with theory. The purpose of the collaboration with SkyySkill Academy was to strengthen industry-academia collaboration and provide the necessary skills for the rapidly progressing EV landscape in India.
What does the EV Technology Programme involve: Curriculum and Learning Structure
The curriculum is designed to strike a balance between applying knowledge and maintaining rigorous academic standards, covering a broad spectrum of technical skills sought after by EV-sector recruiters. Some core subjects include architecture of EVs, battery and battery management systems, electric motors and power electronics, EV charging systems, diagnostics and safety systems, and vehicle energy systems optimisation. Each of these areas is a functional part of the EV value chain across design, manufacturing, service and maintenance.
All participants are required to complete a capstone project that will provide them with a portfolio that demonstrates their ability to solve problems in the given industry. This element is critical for participants looking to enter the manufacturing, R&D, or service ecosystems of EVs, as employers in these areas want to see what candidates have built, not just what they have in their heads.
According to Himansu Sekhar Panda, CEO of SkyySkill Academy, the rapid pace of change in the field of electric mobility means it is more important than ever that those working in the industry stay up to date with the knowledge and skills they offer. It is our goal through the partnership with E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee to help those working in the EV field to gain real skills.
What Participants Get Upon Completion: IIT Roorkee Certification
The certification is an important feature of this course for both professionals and students. Those who complete the module and its associated assessments will be awarded a certificate by the E&ICT Academy, IIT Roorkee.
The E&ICT Academy is an initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, and is hosted by IIT Roorkee. A certificate from this Academy is awarded with the institutional endorsement of IIT Roorkee, one of the oldest and most prestigious of India’s technical universities.
For engineering graduates or diplomates who want to enhance their academic and career credentials without the advantage of an IIT education, this certification is a structured, recognised opportunity to do so. For employed professionals in the automotive and engineering sectors, this certification acknowledges a capability attested as in demand within the industry.
Why This MoU Signals an Important Development for Students Aspiring for Careers in Electric Vehicles
India's electric vehicle (EV) sector is growing rapidly. It cannot keep pace with the availability of skilled technical professionals. There remains a gap in roles focused on battery management, EV diagnostics, charging, and power electronics. It is not that there are no candidates for these roles. Graduates typically have a good foundation in engineering. The gap occurs because little EV-related training is offered in the formal education system.
The signed MoU provides a structured approach to address the gap in EV training. The E&ICT Academy of IIT Roorkee and SkyySkill Academy have jointly offered training to thousands of students in EV technologies and drone technologies. This program integrates SkyySkill Academy's hands-on training with the academic rigour and curriculum of IIT Roorkee.
This opportunity is targeted at final-year engineering students and diploma holders seeking specialisation. The program is expected to be one of the more structured ways to enter the EV workforce in India in 2026.
