IIT Roorkee Partners with NAMTECH and AMNS India, What the New Sustainability Centre Means for India's Manufacturing Future

Through long-range planning with NAMTECH and AM/NS India, IIT Roorkee strategically expanded its industry-academia collaborations towards sustainable manufacturing, advanced technologies, and talent and industry-focused research development.

Roorkee, June 24, 2026: The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, aims to cultivate partnerships with industries to further research and help in talent development. Partnerships with NAMTECH and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India have supported this aim.

IIT Roorkee's Director, Prof. K.K. Pant, was leading a team of IIT Roorkee faculty, Prof. Andallib Tariq, Prof. Absar Ahmad Kazmi, Prof. Manish Mishra, and Prof. Komal Tripathi, and all who developed collaborations with industry and academic leaders to look into advanced modularity and digital skills for the development of better training. IIT Roorkee aims to design collaborative partnerships with industries to help develop manufacturing technologies in order to frame research that addresses both local and global problems.

IIT Roorkee, with the support of NTPC through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, plans to establish the Research and Experiential Learning Centre on Sustainable Energy and Circularity. The focus of the Centre will be on sustainable energy and developing sustainable manufacturing. In support of this goal, IIT Roorkee and NAMTECH signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) that was signed by Prof. Andallib Tariq in the presence of Prof. K.K. Pant, Prof. Vivek Kumar Malik, Dr. Hafeez Ibrahim Hafeezur Rehman, and other project team leaders from IIT Roorkee.

A major highlight from this visit was the first meeting of the Centre at NAMTECH, which synergizes IIT Roorkee’s research capabilities and NAMTECH’s experiential learning with deep industry connections. The meeting convened stakeholders from different institutions to discuss the Centre’s governance, the roadmap for implementation, lab construction, curriculum design, and workforce transformation.

The Centre aims to innovate in green hydrogen, circular economy, ESG analytics, industrial water, smart manufacturing, and sustainable infrastructure. It will utilize IIT Roorkee’s research capabilities and NAMTECH’s experiential learning framework. It will serve as a nexus of academia, industry, and policy to develop future industry-related skills.

The future for Prof. K.K. Pant, of IIT Roorkee, and the IIT Roorkee Administration's vision, and the future for IIT Roorkee will be sustainable and advanced technology-based manufacturing coupled with a skilled workforce. IIT Roorkee is dedicated to forming game-changing collaborations that have the potential to bring research and innovations to the industry and are aligned with the goal of a sustainable and competitive economy for India.

To further strengthen the network of the Centre and the partnership with NAMTECH, IIT Roorkee focused on developing its rich industry-academia collaboration with a partnership with AM/NS India. One of the visit’s major achievements was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IIT Roorkee and AM/NS India for collaboration in the areas of sustainable advanced manufacturing and research, technology, and skills.

Dr. Arvind Bodhankar, Chief Sustainability Officer, AM/NS India, and Prof. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, signed the MoU, witnessed by Mr. Ashutosh Telang, CHRO, and Mr. Amit Harlalka, CFO, AM/NS India, other members of AM/NS India, and NAMTECH senior leadership.

This partnership aims to combine the academic and industrial sectors to expedite the formation of advanced manufacturing and digital technologies, focused research, and executive education on sustainable practices within the steel and manufacturing sectors. This includes the transformation of the workforce and the development of future talent and leadership. NAMTECH will provide its support and act as a facilitator for programming and initiatives that emerge from this partnership.

The IIT Roorkee delegation had the opportunity to learn and gain insight on world-class manufacturing systems and excellence in the fields of Automation, Sustainability, Digitalization, and Operational initiatives. The meetings helped to cultivate the development of new sustainable practices for Industrial Technologies and innovative, sustainable, next-generation manufacturing technologies.

The Dholakia Group diamond manufacturing systems visit also fostered opportunities for collaboration by showcasing the intersection of advanced manufacturing and digital technologies, skill development, and emerging technologies that are transforming traditional industries.

According to Dr. Hafeez, the Director General at NAMTECH, the collaboration among the three organizations is a dynamic framework to innovate education and industry.
