IIT Madras Scholar Rishabh Vashistha Awarded Chief of Army Staff Commendation 2026: A Victory for Deep Tech Defence Innovation

Mr. Rishabh Vashistha, an MS (by Research) scholar at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras, has been awarded the prestigious Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Commendation on the occasion of Army Day 2026.

Chennai, In a landmark recognition for India’s growing defence-startup ecosystem, Mr. Rishabh Vashistha, an MS (by Research) scholar at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras, has been awarded the prestigious Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Commendation on the occasion of Army Day 2026.

The award acknowledges Vashistha’s distinguished service and technical contributions to India's national security, marking a significant moment where academic research has seamlessly transitioned into critical field application for the armed forces.

Pioneering Indigenous Defence Tech: Beyond his academic pursuit, Rishabh serves as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of ShunyAnantam Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a deep-tech defence startup incubated at the IIT Madras Incubation Cell. His work focuses on one of the most vital areas of modern warfare: autonomy and cyber-physical systems. Under his technical leadership, ShunyAnantam is developing:

A universal autonomy software stack. Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Robust cyber-physical systems designed for high-stakes defence environments. The startup represents a robust academic-industry partnership, co-founded by Mr. Aashay Doshi (CEO and IIT Madras Alumnus) alongside distinguished faculty members Prof. Ranjith M. (Dept. of Aerospace Engineering) and Prof. Chandrashekhar L. (Dept. of Data Science & AI).

The "Deep Academia-Military" Collaboration Model

This recognition highlights the success of a specific model of innovation: Deep Academia-Startup-Military Collaboration. Unlike traditional defence procurement, Rishabh’s work was enabled by sustained institutional support and direct engagement with the end-users—the Indian Army. Through the guidance of AgniShodh, IIT Madras, and the Indian Army Research Centre, Rishabh has been able to work closely on niche, critical defence projects, ensuring that the technology developed in the lab directly addresses the real-world challenges faced by soldiers.

Mentorship Founded in Service: The news release from IIT Madras emphasizes that technical prowess alone did not lead to this achievement; it was shaped by values of service and strategic thinking instilled by veteran mentors.

Strategic Vision: Rishabh’s strategic expertise was honed during his tenure as Head of the Youth Wing at the Chakra Dialogues Foundation (CDF), under the mentorship of Wing Commander Satyam Kushwaha (Retd.), a former NSCS Defence Specialist and fighter pilot.

Leadership & Values: Col. Rajeev Bharwan (Retd.), founder of Soldier Unplugged, played a pivotal role in shaping Rishabh’s leadership style, instilling a deep sense of responsibility towards the national cause.

Why This Matters for Students and Researchers

For the EduAdvice community, Rishabh Vashistha’s journey offers critical takeaways:

Research with Impact: It proves that academic research in engineering can have immediate, tangible impacts on national security.

The Rise of Defence-Tech: It signals a golden era for engineering students to enter the defence sector not just as soldiers, but as technologists and entrepreneurs.

Interdisciplinary Success: His success stems from combining Aerospace Engineering with Data Science and AI, proving the value of cross-disciplinary skills.
