CHENNAI, 3rd July 2026: In collaboration, IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur are innovating cyber education in India and will offer India's first practice-oriented, four-year Bachelor of Cybersecurity degree, commencing in July 2026.
The program was designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing market for skilled cybersecurity graduates in India. The program will prepare students to protect the security of the country's expanding digital infrastructure. Cybersecurity and strategic domains, as well as the growing cyber threat environment, will further develop the focus of this program. Admission is offered jointly this year by IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur.
The degree will launch graduates into multiple careers in cyber security, including cyber defense; security operations centers; penetration testing; threat and vulnerability assessment, digital forensic cybersecurity; malware analysis; cloud security; hardware security; and protection of critical infrastructure. The degree will also prepare students for further study in the field and research in cybersecurity.
There is no doubt in seeking such degrees, stated Professor V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.
"Cybersecurity is fundamental to India's technological sovereignty and national security. Strong, complex, and defensible systems can only be built by hands-on cyber systems defenders."
Prof. V. Kamakoti remarked:
"The collaboration of IIT Madras with IIT Kanpur in this innovative Bachelor's of Cybersecurity programme will help refine a model of Bachelor's education that focuses on high-quality and high-engagement education. We hope this new programme will provide highly valued cybersecurity personnel who will help protect the country's digital future."
Rapid Digital Transformation and Cybersecurity
As a rapidly growing economy, India’s strategic focus on digital transformation of industries and services from Health, Finance, Governance, Transport, Telecom, Manufacturing and Defence necessitates increased emphasis on cybersecurity. In addition, rapidly growing industries have identified a need for dedicated basic education in the emerging area of cybersecurity, estimated to be about 1.5 million professionals.
Design of the Bachelor's Cybersecurity Programme
This new Bachelor's programme offers a unique approach to education that combines strong theory with significant laboratory and extended professional practice. Unlike conventional Bachelor's programmes, this new course has been designed to have a high level of engagement to enable the development of operational cybersecurity skills. Continuous interaction with systems, technologies, and security challenges is a hallmark of this new programme.
Field Deployment
A key feature of the program is the 2-year Field Deployment Professional Project, where students focus on live projects. These students work on live professional cybersecurity projects for their last 4 semesters. These students receive mentoring from professionals from strategically and critically located organizations. This project creates a complementary workforce for the organizations. The flexible curriculum embraces the design of a competency-based model. The model helps the students gain skills in multiple dimensions of the profession, including but not limited to Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing, Malware Analysis, Security of Systems, Firmware Reverse Engineering, Hardware Security, Security of the Cloud and Critical Infrastructure, and Security Operations.
Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills using advanced electives, including Digital Forensics, Embedded Systems Security, Secure Processor Architectures, and Applied Cryptography. The first two years involve rigorous, laboratory-based education on fundamental areas of computer science, cybersecurity, and other related professional domains. This includes, but is not limited to, computer systems and organization, programming, the Linux operating system, cryptography, networking, and ethical hacking. The focus of this is to prepare students for advanced areas of specialization and professional deployment.
