Mr Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO of IIT Madras Research Park and Incubation Cell, said the fund is intended to support 24–30 companies and strengthen India's technology capabilities.

The initiative aims to connect research expertise, industry partnerships and patient capital to help deep-tech startups scale their operations and develop products with wider market applications.

Focus on Robotics, Space, Defence and Semiconductors

The fund will focus on intellectual property-led and engineering-intensive startups. Key areas include:

  • Robotics

  • Space technology

  • Defence technology

  • Semiconductors

  • Other frontier technologies aligned with India's strategic interests

A significant share of the fund's portfolio is expected to come from the broader IIT Madras ecosystem, while the remaining investments will be directed towards startups from the wider Indian deep-tech sector.

Early-Stage Startups and Long-Term Capital

Most of the portfolio will focus on early-stage deep-tech companies that have reached Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3–4, indicating that their technologies are at an early stage of development and validation.

Around 60% of the fund's corpus is expected to be allocated towards building the portfolio. The remaining amount will be reserved for follow-on investments in portfolio companies as they progress through subsequent funding rounds.

The fund is structured for a period of 10 years, with a possible two-year extension. This long-term structure is intended to accommodate the extended research, development and commercialisation cycles commonly associated with deep-tech ventures.

Building on IIT Madras' Deep-Tech Innovation Ecosystem

The initiative builds on IIT Madras' announcement at the previous Sangam conference of its intention to establish a venture capital fund dedicated to deep-tech startups.

The institute identified the need for an investment partner that could work closely with its research, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to help promising technologies develop into scalable products and companies.

Under the partnership, IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures will collaborate on strategic portfolio construction and investments.
