Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has marked the Golden Jubilee of its Department of Ocean Engineering, completing 50 years of contributions to ocean science, maritime engineering and national infrastructure development. Established in 1977 and later formalised as a department in 1982, it has evolved into a leading centre for education and research in ocean engineering and naval architecture. The department’s work aligns with India’s growing focus on the Blue Economy, deep ocean exploration, shipbuilding and sustainable port development. As one of the few institutions in the country offering specialised undergraduate programmes in this field, it continues to play a crucial role in developing expertise and technology related to ocean resources and maritime infrastructure.
Expanding Research and Innovation
Looking ahead, the department plans to strengthen research in offshore renewable energy, including wave-based energy systems and other ocean-driven technologies. It is also focusing on developing solutions for coastal resilience and climate adaptation, while integrating Artificial Intelligence and Data Science into its academic programmes and research initiatives to enhance innovation in ocean engineering.
Over the years, the department has contributed to several projects of national importance, including coastal protection efforts, port development studies, marine hydrodynamics research and environmental restoration initiatives. Its work has supported improvements in coastal ecosystems, water management and maritime infrastructure across India.
Advanced Infrastructure and Global Collaboration
The department is equipped with advanced research facilities, including large-scale wave basins, towing tanks and simulation systems for maritime studies. These facilities have enabled cutting-edge research in offshore structures, coastal engineering and marine technologies, while also supporting collaborations with national agencies and international institutions.
Year-Long Celebrations and Future Outlook
The Golden Jubilee year will feature a series of academic events, conferences and industry interactions aimed at fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. With a strong foundation in research and education, the department aims to further strengthen its role in advancing sustainable ocean development and supporting India’s long-term maritime and environmental goals.
