IIT Madras AI Governance Conclave 2026: Why AI Measurement Could Change Responsible AI

Tamil Nadu : Artificial intelligence is leaving research labs and entering healthcare, finance, education, businesses and other real-world settings. But as AI systems proliferate, one question is becoming harder to ignore: how do we actually measure whether an AI system is safe, fair, robust and trustworthy? That question will centre on the Industry Conclave on AI Governance 2026, hosted by the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI), IIT Madras, on October 22, 2026.

IIT Madras AI Governance conclave 2026 theme is “AI Measurement and Governance.” This year’s event will bring together researchers, industry leaders, startups, policymakers and AI practitioners to discuss how measurement can help in practical AI governance.

Why Is AI Measurement Becoming So Important?

Governance frameworks can define principles, but applying those principles in practice requires ways to assess AI systems in a particular context. The IIT Madras’ CeRAI points out that AI systems can behave differently based on their deployment environment. Measuring issues such as fairness, safety, robustness, privacy and security therefore needs approaches that account for the context in which an AI system is operating.

This is particularly relevant in India where AI applications may run across a range of languages, sectors, user groups and socio-economic settings. A measurement framework for one environment may not automatically take into account the risks and requirements of another.

What Will Happen at the IIT Madras Conclave?

The one-day programme includes research, discussion and practical sessions rather than focusing on policy conversations. The official agenda includes keynote talks, CeRAI research highlights, lightning talks, a fireside chat, a panel discussion on consumer rights, workshops and a startup showcase.

The morning programme begins with registration followed by opening remarks and keynote sessions. The schedule then moves into CeRAI highlights and lightning talks before a fireside discussion on AI measurement and governance. A panel on consumer rights will look at the governance debate from the point of view of the actual people using AI-powered products and services. The afternoon will have hands-on workshop sessions led by CeRAI principal investigators and leads.

From AI Research to Practical Governance

One of the intriguing aspects of the conclave is the emphasis on translating governance principles into measurable – and potentially auditable – practices. According to CeRAI, the event will aim to explore measurement as an operational component of AI governance. The Centre also wants to share research, evaluation methodologies, metrics and tools that organisations could use in their own AI systems.

The Centre has already worked on AI evaluation and responsible-AI resources. Its published work includes an AI Evaluation Tool for conversational agents that uses structured test plans, evaluation metrics and strategies to assess AI systems across tasks, domains and languages. That background means that the measurement theme is more than a theoretical discussion. It connects directly with the practical challenge of evaluating AI systems before and during deployment.

Who Can Attend The AI Governance Conclave?

The event is particularly appealing to:

  • AI and machine learning researchers
  • Technology and product professionals
  • Policymakers and public-sector professionals
  • Responsible AI and AI safety practitioners
  • Academics and faculty members
  • AI startups and entrepreneurs
  • Legal and compliance professionals
  • Organisations deploying AI systems

Students and early-career researchers interested in responsible AI can learn a lot about how technical evaluation connects with governance, regulation and deployment. The cross-sector format can also enable a more inclusive learning experience by enabling a conversation between technical, policy and business viewpoints.

AI Startup Showcase Adds a Practical Dimension

The conclave will also have an AI Startup Showcase for emerging companies working on AI measurement, evaluation, observability, compliance and governance solutions. CeRAI says the showcase will aim to connect startups with researchers and policy experts.

For the wider AI ecosystem, this means that there is a chance to see how governance requirements are being translated into tools and products rather than staying in policy documents.
