Kanpur: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has released revised guidelines enabling undergraduate students to take Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as Open Electives through the SWAYAM platform.
According to a notice issued by the Office of the Dean, Academic Affairs, the revised policy aligns with new guidelines adopted during the Senate meeting held on May 15–16, 2023. The changes aim to provide students with greater flexibility in course selection while integrating online learning into the formal curriculum.
Under the revised framework, students will be allowed to enroll in approved MOOCs offered through SWAYAM. However, only courses with proctored examinations and verified certificates will be considered for credit toward graduation.
The institute clarified that a maximum of two MOOC courses can be counted as open electives. Students are required to submit their course completion certificates within the prescribed deadlines.
To qualify for credit transfer, students must also pass the proctored examinations conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) as part of the SWAYAM certification process.
Officials noted that the revised guidelines aim to enhance interdisciplinary learning opportunities while ensuring academic rigor and quality standards.
Students have been advised to check the official IIT Kanpur website and submit requests through the designated online form for course approval.
