Over the last three years, nearly half of IIT Gandhinagar’s undergraduate students received support via scholarships, fee waivers, and financial aid programs. IIT Gandhinagar Provides Scholarships and Fee Waivers to 45% of Undergraduates in 2025-26

Gandhinagar : Every year, thousands of students take the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) with the dream of being accepted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Admission is just part of the battle. For many students from low-income households, the post-admission costs of tuition, hostel and living expenses create a financial burden and a challenge to cope with that may be insurmountable. The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has decided to address that challenge and wall.

As of the 2025-26 academic year, 45% of undergraduates at IIT Gandhinagar will be the beneficiaries of financial support from the institute. Financial support is provided through scholarships, donor aid, and other forms of assistance. For the 2025-26 academic year, the institute has committed nearly Rs 5.88 crore to student support aid.

IIT Gandhinagar Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Manish Kumar has been very clear in stating that "at IIT Gandhinagar, we believe that no deserving student should be deprived of an opportunity owing to economic constraints”. With that financial assistance program design philosophy in mind, support is provided to students from the time they set foot on the campus.

The IITGN financial aid has been devised to cover various community incomes. Students of Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) are given a full waiver on fees. Students with a family income of less than Rs. 1 lakh are given a total waiver of tuition fees. Students with a family income of Rs. 5 lakh are given a partial fee waiver.

Apart from these waivers, the Institute has a total of more than 85 scholarships and financial aid programs which have been established with funds received through donations, collaborations with the industry, alumni, and internal funds of the Institute. One of the financial aid programs has been sponsored by Tata Motors Limited.

Students can avail of zero-interest educational loans, Free Basic Messing (FBM), and Institute Soft Loans to meet their various financial needs. Post-graduate students are given fee waivers based on their parents’ annual income. Collectively, IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) aid programs cover a wide range of financial needs, including food and other basic necessities, thereby enabling students to pursue their education without financial burden.

This support's real-world impacts are most evident when students share their stories. A Mechanical Engineering student from Wardha, Maharashtra, does his IIT Gandhinagar fees with a mix of the Vidyalakshmi Education Scheme and the Tata Motors Financial Assistance Program. "The school covers the tuition, but I have to manage a budget for the rest of the month,” said the student, exposing the Singhs of the IIT Gandhinagar community.

The student from Rajasthan explains, “I would not have made it to the end of the course without the IIT Gandhinagar soft loans, the FBM scheme, and the other scholarships from the institute.” Financial assistance for IIT Gandhinagar students coming from farming families of rural Rajasthan also means that dining and housing costs, which were burdensome for the students and their families, are no longer a concern. Indeterminate rough economic conditions and uncertain crop harvests are also a concern for the students and their families. “ Thanks to IIT Gandhinagar's support, I can now concentrate on my studies and projects and no longer have to worry about IIT Gandhinagar’s fee structure and the costs of staying and the daily expenses.”
