Gandhinagar, September 24, 2026: IIT Gandhinagar is expanding its international engagement in semiconductor and advanced technology research through partnerships with three leading Taiwanese universities. IIT Gandhinagar has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech), and National Central University (NCU). The ceremony was attended by Mr Minand Deshpande, Director General, India Taipei Association, along with the Presidents of Taipei Tech, Taiwan Tech and NCU. The MoUs focus on strengthening collaboration in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, with opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, joint research, knowledge sharing and talent development. The partnerships are aimed at deepening academic and technological linkages between India and Taiwan.
The agreements were signed during the IIT Gandhinagar delegation’s visit to Taiwan from September 20 to 25, 2026, at the invitation of the Taiwan Ministry of Education. The delegation was led by Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT Gandhinagar. Prof Rajat Moona highlighted the importance of strengthening international research partnerships in advanced technologies and said that the collaborations with Taiwanese universities would create opportunities for students and faculty to engage in advanced research, training and knowledge exchange.
Dr Kuo-Wei Liu, Deputy Minister, Taiwan Ministry of Education, noted the growing presence of Indian students in Taiwan. According to the Ministry, 974 Indian doctoral students were studying in Taiwan in 2026, making India the second-largest source after Indonesia, which had 1,081 doctoral students. He also noted the potential for IIT Gandhinagar and SAMARTH to deepen India-Taiwan collaboration.
Taiwan has a strong semiconductor ecosystem, while IIT Gandhinagar is located in Gujarat, which is emerging as a semiconductor hub in India. IIT Gandhinagar is also advancing semiconductor education, research and workforce development through the Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH). SAMARTH is aimed at advancing workforce development, applied research, technological innovation and industry collaboration in the semiconductor sector.
As part of the Taiwan visit, the IIT Gandhinagar delegation is also engaging with National Cheng Kung University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan Tech, Taipei Tech, National Central University, Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI), and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC). The discussions are focused on identifying opportunities for joint research, student and faculty exchanges, specialised training and long-term technological collaboration. The partnerships with Taipei Tech, Taiwan Tech and NCU mark another step in IIT Gandhinagar’s efforts to build international academic and research collaborations in semiconductors, AI and advanced technologies.
The Taiwan Ministry of Education has also confirmed that Prof Rajat Moona led the IIT Gandhinagar delegation during the September 20–25 visit and that the three MoUs cover cooperation in semiconductors, AI and advanced engineering.
