IITs Set for Major Expansion: New Seats, AI Focus and Research Boost Across India

A major expansion plan for India's newer IITs is set to reshape technical education. With ₹11,828 crore allocated for infrastructure, thousands of new seats, research parks and an AI-focused upgrade for IIT Patna, the initiative signals one of the largest investments in the future of higher education and innovation.

The Ministry of Education has introduced a substantial initiative to grow India’s next generation of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and aims to develop the higher education infrastructure to strengthen the capacity of more students and to promote more research-based innovations across the nation. The announcement was made by the Department of Higher Education via their official social media pages, in line with the government’s initiatives for the development of education and the empowerment of youth. It is the integral part of the multiple initiatives in progress to better the technical education infrastructure and to establish advanced educational institutions to satisfy the future industrial and technological requirements.

In a statement of the ministry, the third phase of the expansion of IITs plans 6,500 more seats in six IITs. The IITs that will be impacted by the expansion are:

  • IIT Tirupati
  • IIT Palakkad
  • IIT Bhilai
  • IIT Jammu
  • IIT Patna
  • IIT Dharwad

The expansion will be a positive step toward giving more students the option to pursue technical education and toward addressing the demand for more seats in leading technical institutions.

IIT Patna to Become a Center for AI and Higher Research

In the major announcements, IIT Patna is one of the IITs with more plans and upgrades in the area of teaching and learning of artificial intelligence, and in the area of self-research as well as the development of research partnerships with foreign universities.

The development plans will help position IIT Patna among leading institutes in new technologies and will help promote collaboration of researchers, industry and foreign universities. This is an initiative that can help India support large-scale artificial intelligence technologies and advanced research in fields allied to technologies.

₨11,828 Crore for Faculty and Research Infrastructure

The government has dedicated ₨11,828.79 crore between the fiscal years (FY) 2025-26 and 2028-29 to support this expansion.

Parts of this funding include:

  • 130 new research-oriented professorships
  • 5 new research parks
  • Academic and Research Infrastructure Expansion
  • Improvement of Innovation and Technology Development Facilities

Research parks are expected to fulfill an important function in establishing an interface between industry and academia by offering opportunities for innovation, technology transfer, and incubation of new ventures.

Building Capacity for India's Future Workforce

The latest expansion demonstrates the government's continuation in the building of India's higher education ecosystem by providing investment in infrastructure, research, and the development of faculty. The focus of the initiative is on the development of the institutional capacity of the faculty and students to meet the challenges of the evolving global knowledge economy. The expansion is likely to offer more opportunities to students with the growing demand for admission to leading engineering institutes and support India's innovation, research, and advanced technologies.
