IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University Expand Partnership with New Joint Master's and PhD Programmes

IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University have deepened their relationship and offer more programs by introducing a Joint Master's at the level of Biological Sciences, a Joint PhD Programme at the level of Biological Sciences (in 2026), and by furthering their interests in AI, robotics, healthcare and interdisciplinary research.

New Delhi: IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University, France, are further strengthening their strategic partnership by incorporating advanced research and academic programs, together with the mobility and innovation that may be required, in their areas of mutual interest that may be of global significance. The partnership shows the increased pace of the India–France strategic partnership and the dual commitment to the advancement of knowledge and technology for the benefit of society. With the robust basis of the Franco-Indian Integrated Health Campus, IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University plan to launch a joint Master's program in Biological Sciences and a joint PhD program in 2026.

In June 2026, a high-level team from IIT Delhi will be led by the Director, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, to Sorbonne University to further strengthen the institutional relations and explore further collaboration. Discussions will focus on the partnership expansion beyond health care into frontier areas such as Material Science, Artificial Intelligence, Informatics, Computer Science, Robotics, and other interdisciplinary domains that will be of high relevance to both society and technology.

Regarding the partnership with Sorbonne University, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, stated the following:

"We are pleased with our partnership with Sorbonne University in health care. We have launched joint Master's and PhD programs with student mobility in both directions. When we move into the new domains of AI, sustainable technologies, and robotics, we see the potential of establishing a research and innovation ecosystem to support the collaboration."

This partnership complements the wider India- France strategic alliance. Education, research and innovation, along with health and digital technology, are central to this focus. It also builds on the aspirations of both countries to enhance people-to-people engagement and forge sustainable scientific partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.

IIT Delhi and Sorbonne University intend to enhance collaboration by sharing research infrastructure, increasing the mobility of students and staff, undertaking co-supervision of doctoral students, establishing joint degree programs, and conducting international schools and workshops, as well as collaborative research on global issues. At the center of this collaboration is the Franco-Indian Integrated Health Campus, which was established as a groundbreaking initiative to facilitate interdisciplinary research and education in the health care arena.

The campus integrates engineering, medical, life, and social sciences as well as digital technologies, and aims to foster collaboration to develop innovative solutions to modern-day health care problems. The Integrated Health Campus has facilitated numerous activities, including collaborative research, student internships, mobility of faculty and students, as well as workshops and scientific exchanges.

The significance of the partnership has recently been recognized at the highest levels, with French President Emmanuel Macron referring to this collaboration in his address at Bharat Innovates 2026. He named this collaboration as the flagship project of the Indo-French scientific and educational partnership, thus highlighting the collaboration.
