IIT Delhi Marks 68th Foundation Day, Releases First Ever Alumni Impact Report

IIT Delhi marks its 68th Foundation Day and releases its first Alumni Impact Report highlighting 65,000 alumni contributions in leadership, startups, public service, and academia.

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) celebrated its 68th Foundation Day, marking the occasion with the release of its first-ever Alumni Impact Report, highlighting the transformative contributions of over 65,000 alumni to India and the global economy.

The report was released during the Foundation Day समारोह by Chief Guest Dr. Gurtej S. Sandhu, Principal Fellow & Corporate Vice President at Micron Technology and IIT Delhi alumnus, along with Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi.

Alumni: Beyond Financial Support

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Gurtej S. Sandhu said alumni play a crucial role not only through financial contributions but also via mentorship, industry connections, and global representation of IITs. He noted that the worldwide recognition of IIT graduates significantly benefits current students and strengthens India’s technological reputation.

Dr. Sandhu (M.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1985 batch) also delivered a special lecture on “The Future of Chip Technology and the Role of Innovation.” He is globally recognized as one of the top inventors with a remarkable number of patents.

65,000 Alumni, Global Impact

Speaking at a press conference, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said the Alumni Impact Report showcases how IIT Delhi graduates have emerged as global leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and academicians over the past 65+ years.

“From 150 alumni in 1966 to over 65,000 today, our graduates are the heartbeat of India’s technological and social progress,” Prof. Banerjee said.

Corporate Leadership

  • Around 10,000 alumni hold leadership roles in Banking, Finance, Manufacturing, and Engineering
  • 70% of them are based in India
  • 1,000+ alumni serve on corporate boards worldwide

Entrepreneurship & Startups

  • 2,500+ founders and co-founders from IIT Delhi
  • Alumni-driven companies have generated 4.8 lakh direct jobs
