IIT Delhi Hosts UN Under Secretary General Amandeep Singh Gill for Insightful Discussion on AI Governance

Mr. Gill emphasizes youth involvement in the Global Digital Compact and highlights the role of young innovators in fostering equitable technology development.

 

New Delhi, January 8, 2025 :  The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) welcomed Mr. Amandeep Singh Gill, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Digital and Emerging Technologies and Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology, for an engaging discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) governance and its global implications.

Delivering a talk titled “UN@80: New Directions for Technology Governance,” Mr. Gill highlighted the critical need for inclusive frameworks that ensure technology and AI benefit society as a whole. He stressed the importance of collaboration among nations and stakeholders to create equitable and sustainable technology policies.

During his visit, Mr. Gill engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with IIT Delhi’s Director, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, along with distinguished Deans and faculty members. Together, they explored the future of AI governance and the evolving trends in the field.

Engaging with Startups and Innovators
Mr. Gill also toured the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at IIT Delhi, where he interacted with startup teams from Cyran AI, Mobisec, Tensor Dynamics, and Synergy Quantum. These innovators presented their cutting-edge solutions aimed at addressing societal challenges, showcasing the potential of technology to drive meaningful change.

Addressing Students and Faculty
In a keynote address to an audience of students and faculty from IIT Delhi and beyond, Mr. Gill underscored the importance of involving young people in the Global Digital Compact (GDC), adopted by UN member states in September 2024. He highlighted the pivotal role of young innovators and students in ensuring technology development remains fair and inclusive.

Fireside Chat and Closing Remarks
The session featured a dynamic fireside chat moderated by Prof. Vaishnavi Sundarajan from IIT Delhi’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The discussion delved into key aspects of AI governance and addressed audience questions, offering valuable insights into the global landscape of technology governance.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Narayanan D. Kurur, Dean of Academics at IIT Delhi, who expressed gratitude to Mr. Gill, the audience, and the Academic Outreach team for organizing the successful event.
