New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has found itself at the centre of a growing controversy following its official statement on the “Critical Philosophy of Caste and Race” conference, held from January 16 to 18, 2026.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), IIT Delhi stated that “serious concerns have been raised over the choice of speakers and content of the conference.” The institute added that it has sought an explanation from the concerned faculty member and has constituted a fact-finding committee with independent members to investigate the matter. The institute assured that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with institutional protocols, reaffirming its commitment to national goals, academic integrity, and established guidelines.
Public Criticism After Conference Conclusion
The statement, however, triggered strong reactions online, with many users questioning the timing and intent of the institute’s response, as the conference had already concluded on January 18.
Several users asked why objections were not addressed before the event took place, with one post questioning why concerns regarding scholar Divya Dwivedi were not examined in advance. Others alleged that similar conferences had been organised earlier as well, including in 2024, and questioned how such events continued without scrutiny.
Allegations and Sharp Political Reactions
A section of users accused the conference of promoting political or ideological narratives, raising objections to the theme of “Caste and Race” being discussed at a premier technical institution. Some comments described the subject as an “imported Western framework,” questioning its relevance within IITs.
More severe allegations were also posted online, including claims about foreign influence and funding, calls for removal of faculty members, and accusations of administrative failure. IIT Delhi has not responded to or confirmed any of these claims, and they remain unverified social media allegations.
IIT Delhi’s Official Position
IIT Delhi has so far limited its response to its official statement, emphasizing that the matter is under review through a formal process. The institute has not named individuals, commented on specific allegations, or announced interim findings.
The controversy has once again sparked debate over academic freedom versus institutional oversight, the scope of interdisciplinary discourse in technical institutions, and the role of social media in influencing administrative action.
The findings of the fact-finding committee are awaited, and further action, if any, will depend on its conclusions.
