New Delhi, July 10: Will research laboratories be the key to the future of sustainability in India? IIT Delhi points towards the need for closer collaboration between academia and industry and the provision of corporate social responsibility (CSR). During the CSR Conclave 2026, the institute presented various technologies aimed at solving environmental problems and appealed to the business leaders to fund impact research.
Organized by the Corporate Relations Office, the Conclave received over 245 registrations. Attendees included representatives of leading corporates, CSR foundations, PSUs, and other government bodies and agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions. The focal point of the event was to translate research into scalable and sustainable solutions for the nation.
New Initiatives at IIT Delhi
The conclave made two noteworthy announcements:
- The CSR Project Compendium, a collection of research and societal projects seeking CSR funding.
- The CSR Impact Stories, which narrate the successful CSR projects of IIT Delhi and their impact in the past few years.
- The publications were released by Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, and witnessed the presence of the following faculty: Prof. Vivek Buwa, Prof. Jayant Jain and Prof. Ashwini Agrawal.=
Technologies Crafted to Address Actual Issues
Instead of just talking, the conclave included a technology exhibition and allowed researchers from IIT Delhi to present some of their work aligned with the sustainability goals of India.
Some of the technologies included:
- Circular bioeconomy using algal and microbial biotechnologies
- Waste-to-resource technologies
- Sustainable materials and circular economy
- Clean energy technologies
- Technologies with rural and agricultural impact
- Good and clean combustion systems
All of these technologies were an indication of the practical technologies IIT Delhi is developing to support national missions of India and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Industry and Academia Focus on Stronger Alliances
Responsible corporate actions, clean technologies, and collaborative innovations were some of the focus areas of the conclave panels featuring heads of large organizations describing their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.
The long-standing message was that the tough ongoing environmental concerns cannot be addressed by research institutions and corporates acting alone, and that stronger alliances are increasingly imperative.
Director Describes Need for Strategic CSR Collaborations
While addressing the conclave, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, said that sustainable and inclusive development of India relies on alliances from different sectors (Corporate, Government, Civil Society, and Academia).
He stated that IIT Delhi is focused on developing technologies that meet the needs of the nation, and strategic CSR partnerships may aid faster transitions of research from the lab to innovations that are real and socially beneficial.
CSR Excellence Awards Presented
The institute presented its CSR Excellence Awards to some of its corporate partners. These awards were given for making contributions to research, innovation, and infrastructure, and for having a positive impact on society through CSR collaborations with IIT Delhi.
Growing Momentum for Research-Driven Sustainability
The active involvement of corporate leaders and CSR professionals demonstrated a growing readiness to invest in research-driven innovation with the potential to generate concrete environmental and social impacts.
Given that sustainability has now become a principal focus for the majority of industries, IIT Delhi's CSR Conclave 2026 aimed to go beyond an academic event by creating a forum to connect researchers with those organizations that can implement and scale nationwide solution efforts that have social impact across the country.
