Mumbai, : In a landmark move to promote gender equity in higher education, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced the launch of WINGS (Women INspiring Growth in STEM), a full-tuition scholarship for undergraduate women pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The scheme will come into effect from the 2026–27 academic year.
The initiative, funded by IIT Bombay alumnus Bharat Desai and his wife Neerja Sethi, aims to empower women, especially those from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, by removing financial barriers and encouraging greater female participation in technical fields.
Key Features of WINGS
- 100% tuition support: Covers full tuition fees for women in STEM undergraduate courses at IIT Bombay.
- Focus on inclusivity: Encourages applications from underprivileged and rural students.
- Nationwide impact: Expected to inspire similar initiatives across Indian institutions.
- Beyond financial aid: Aims to motivate more young women to pursue careers in science and technology.
Applauding the initiative, Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, said, “Financial constraints should never determine a student’s future. This scholarship ensures that talented young women in STEM can pursue their aspirations without limitations. It is a step towards a more equitable and diverse student community at IIT Bombay.”
A Vision for Change
With WINGS, IIT Bombay envisions not just supporting individual students but also driving systemic change in higher education, fostering diversity, and creating future leaders in STEM.
Further details on eligibility and application timelines will be announced on the official IIT Bombay website closer to the 2026–27 admissions cycle.
