IIT (BHU) Varanasi Records Best Ever Performance in QS Subject Rankings 2026

Institute sees major jump across disciplines, with multiple subjects entering global top bands. Strong gains in engineering, computer science and pharmacy reflect growing research impact.

BANARAS, UTTAR PRADESH: In a significant achievement for Indian higher education, IIT (BHU) Varanasi has recorded its best-ever performance in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, marking a major leap in its global academic standing. The institute demonstrated broad-based improvement, with 13 out of 14 subjects ranked, reflecting consistent progress in research quality, academic reputation, and international visibility.

The latest rankings highlight strong performance across multiple disciplines. Three subjects have secured positions within the top 250 globally, while seven subjects are placed in the top 300 and eleven in the top 500, indicating a steady upward trajectory. In the broader categories, Engineering & Technology improved to rank 332, while Natural Sciences entered the 451–500 band, reinforcing the institute’s strength in core scientific domains.

Among individual subjects, Computer Science & Information Systems registered a significant jump to the 251–300 band, while Electrical and Mechanical Engineering secured positions in the 201–250 range. Civil Engineering also entered the 201–275 band, and both Chemical Engineering and Materials Science were placed in the 251–300 bracket. Notably, Pharmacy made its debut in the rankings within the 201–250 band, highlighting the institute’s expanding academic footprint. Other disciplines also featured in global rankings, including Mathematics (301–350), Physics & Astronomy (351–400), Environmental Sciences (401–450), and Biological Sciences (651–700). This wide representation across subjects reflects the institute’s focus on strengthening interdisciplinary research and academic excellence.

Institute leadership attributed the performance to sustained efforts in enhancing research output, global collaborations, and industry engagement. Officials noted that ongoing international partnerships and strategic initiatives aimed at improving visibility and impact are expected to further strengthen the institute’s position in global rankings in the coming years.
