IIM Kozhikode launches Centre for Employment Relations and Labour Studies

“The larger aim of this Centre would be to mobilize ideas from fellow academia, thought leaders, government, and corporations to prevent informalization of formal jobs while championing sustainable enterprises.

Kozhikode:  The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode has set up a think tank, Centre for Employment Relations and Labour Studies (CERLS), which would help in the transitioning of the workers and economically weaker sections from an informal to a formal economy.
The first conference by CERLS will take place in January 2024. The institute also plans to conduct labour conferences regularly each year.
“The larger aim of this Centre would be to mobilize ideas from fellow academia, thought leaders, government, and corporations to prevent informalization of formal jobs while championing sustainable enterprises. Additionally, the Centre would work closely with organizations to maintain fair labor standards,” said IIM Kozhikode director Prof Debashis Chatterjee.
Dr. Manoranjan Dhal, Professor in the Human Resource Management at IIM Kozhikode will head the CERLS think tank. Experts in labour economics, labour laws and people management Prof Shannu Narayan, Prof Chitwan Lalji and Prof. Surya Prakash Pati respectively will also be a part of the core team.

“The increasing technological encroachment in work has led to a monumental gap in the quality of life between sections of the working class. Further, mass downsizing, precarious employment conditions for the non-standard workers, and amplification of grievances of the migrant labour, construction workers as well as gig workers have increased in recent years. These are the very reasons that propelled the thought of establishing this Centre,” Dr Dhal said
