I strongly felt like sharing my thoughts on “The Importance of Ability for High Performanceversus High Performance with Human Values”:
Today, we find ourselves at the crossroads of performance and trust, a place where highperformance is often sought in all aspects of our personal and professional lives. But I wantto challenge you today to think about what truly drives success, both individually and as asociety: is it just raw ability for high performance, or is it the deeper, more intrinsic qualitiesof trust and human values that sustain it in the long run?
We live in an era that constantly demands more – more efficiency, more results, moreoutput. But while performance is essential, we must ask ourselves: at what cost? Do wefocus so much on performance that we overlook the importance of how we achieve thatperformance? Can we truly sustain high performance in the long term without consideringhuman connections, trust, and ethical behaviour?
This brings us to the concept of high trust ability and human values. Trust is foundational to
every relationship – whether professional, personal, or societal. The ability to build andmaintain trust is perhaps the most important skill we can develop. Trust is not builtovernight; it is earned through consistent actions, integrity, and honesty. But beyond theworkplace, trust is an integral part of human relationships and societal cohesion. Withouttrust, even the most high-performing systems will eventually break down, as people will lackconfidence in the processes, leaders, or organizations driving them.
Human values, such as – integrity, empathy, respect, and fairness are the core principlesthat should guide our actions and decisions. Human values remind us that the ends do notjustify the means and that the process of getting to the top matters just as much as theoutcome itself. We can’t lose sight of the bigger picture—how our actions impact others andwhat legacy we are leaving behind.
High performance and high trust should go hand in hand. Imagine a high-performing teamthat constantly meets its targets but does so through unethical practices or by underminingtrust. A group that prioritizes trust and human values over sheer performance may seem tofall short in terms of output in the short term. The true measure of success lies in balancingthe ability to perform with the ability to uphold human values. High performance needs thefoundation of human values to be sustainable, and human values need the results ofperformance to be meaningful.
