Young Earth Scientists Unite at IGYM 2025 to Reimagine Climate Education

Prayoga Hosts Global Workshop in Bengaluru Bringing Together Future Geoscience Leaders from India and Abroad

Bengaluru:
In a landmark step toward redefining climate education and nurturing global geoscience leadership, the Prayoga Institute of Education Research hosted the inaugural International Geosciences Youth Movement (IGYM) 2025 workshop at its nature-immersed research campus on Kanakapura Road, Bengaluru.

Organized in partnership with the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO) and RISE Philanthropy, and supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, the week-long residential event convened 30 top-performing high school students — including 15 international finalists from the International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) representing Israel, France, Spain, Sri Lanka, and the USA, and 15 Indian students — all united by a deep commitment to Earth science education.

A Vision for Transformative Earth Systems Education

The workshop focused on two critical themes: rethinking how geoscience is taught in schools and engaging youth with real-world challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and natural disasters. Through field studies, lab experiments, leadership sessions, and peer-led projects, students explored Earth System processes and developed action plans to champion Earth Systems Education (ESE) in their communities and classrooms worldwide.

Fieldwork near Kanakapura exposed participants to local geology, while immersive, intercultural collaboration fostered lasting friendships and global exchange.

> “This was an amazing experience,” said Rigveda Guptha, a Grade 12 student from Bengaluru. “The field trips brought geoscience to life. And the fun, music, and discussions made learning deeply engaging.”

> Eva Smidtas from Paris added, “It’s my first time in India, and it feels like home. The support, the shared learning, the culture — everything has made this workshop unforgettable.

 Partnership for Broader Impact

During the event, Prayoga signed an MoU with RISE Philanthropy to expand access to hands-on geoscience education for underserved students, reinforcing the institute’s long-term mission of inclusive and impactful science learning.

The program was mentored by leading Earth Science educators including Prof. Nir Orion (Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel), Chair of IGEO, who played a central role in shaping the workshop experience.

Dr. K.S. Nagahushana, Director of Research at Prayoga, summarized the event’s essence:

> IGYM 2025 embodies experiential learning, youth empowerment, and global collaboration. It’s a timely investment in the future stewards of our planet.”

With IGYM 2025, Prayoga has not only launched a dynamic new platform for international youth engagement in geoscience, but also laid the foundation for a global network of young Earth science ambassadors — ready to reimagine climate education and lead with purpose.
