
New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) celebrated its 37th Foundation Day on November 19, 2022.The Foundation Day celebration started with the floral tribute at the statue of Late PM Smt. Indira Gandhi situated at the main gate of the IGNOU headquarter in Maidan Garhi by Prof. Nageshwar Rao, Vice Chancellor IGNOU and other key functionaries of the university including Pro-Vice Chancellors, School Directors faculty members and IGNOU fraternity.
The Chief Guest on the occasion was Hon’ble Minister, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs Govt. of India and delivered the Foundation Day Lecture. Prof. Rakesh Sinha, Rajya Sabha Member, was the Guest of Honour on the day.
Congratulating IGNOU on its 37th Foundation Day Hon’ble Minister, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs commended the role played by IGNOU in upholding the Indian Knowledge traditions which are an intrinsic part of our values. The Hon'ble Minister through anecdotes explained that the Indian Knowledge System which he said relies on learning through practicing and experiencing to gain practical knowledge. He also lauded university's push for regional languages by launching Programmes in different Indian languages as he said that one learns the first language from mother only and she is the first teacher.
Prof. Rakesh Sinha, Rajya Sabha Member, Guest of Honour in his address at the occasion cited three impediments viz., Social, Economical and Geographical in way of wider reach of education in India. He extolled the unique system of IGNOU which has overcome all the barriers and has been able to make available higher education to even the far flung areas of the country at affordable cost ensuring equity and inclusivity in society.
Prof. Nageshwar Rao, VC IGNOU in his presidential address thanked the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour for accepting to be part of this very important day in the journey of the university. He made a special mention of the former colleagues and their contributions in making this great institution. Talking about the new initiatives of the University, Prof. Rao apprised the Minister and the distinguished guest that the University has launched 100 new programmes in the last two years and has endeavoured to launch programmes in regional languages covering Indian traditional knowledge also.
On the occasion, the university had new launches including book unveilings, MBA Audio-based courses etc., The awards were also distributed to the Schools, RCs, Divisions and Centers of the University for their exemplary efforts.
