IDP Announces Major Change for Test Takers: IELTS to Be Computer-Based Only
The IELTS exam is undergoing major changes. Beginning this September, IDP will offer only computer-delivered exams. This change eliminates the paper-based test in a majority of the markets and will be implemented globally.
This change prioritizes the preferences of the candidates. The data from the partners of the IELTS indicate that the majority of the test takers prefer the computer based test because there are more frequent test opportunities, the results are available quicker, and the test is more flexible. The examiners who wish to study, work, or migrate to another country will need to make some adjustments to how they prepare for the exam.
Why is IELTS moving to computer-based testing?
The rapid growth of computer-based testing is the primary reason given for this change by IELTS. Research data from the partners of the IELTS indicates that the preferred testing option for the majority of test takers is the computer based option because of the previously mentioned factors.
For the reading, listening, and writing sections of the test, candidates will use a computer to complete these sections. However, the speaking section of the test will continue to be conducted in a face-to-face setting and will be assessed by an IELTS examiner as it currently is.
In some of the markets, the IELTS will offer test takers the option to complete the other sections of the test via the computer and handwrite the writing section of the test. This option will not be available in all of the markets.
What Changes for Candidates?
The way candidates are tested is evolving, while the nature of testing is not. Candidates will still be tested on their:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
The length of the test, types of questions, band score, and criteria for assessment will not change. Universities, employers, and the immigration department will continue to recognize IELTS scores as they do now.
Benefits of the Computer-Based IELTS
The computer-based version has a number of advantages for candidates, including:
- Faster results in 3–5 days.
- More test opportunities within the week.
- More test slot options.
- Test questions can be navigated in any order.
- Test answers can be edited prior to final submission.
While all of these features will make the test easier, they will not impact the academic integrity of the test.
Will the Test Preparation Methods Have to Change?
This change will not impact the candidates as there is no new syllabus. However, it is advisable to prepare by practicing typing test responses and practicing with official computer-based tests.
Students who have only practiced writing the test by hand may benefit from:
- Taking a computer-based practice test.
- Typing practice to improve typing speed and accuracy.
- Practicing reading the test in passage online.
- Practicing the test while managing time using a timer.
The above will help students feel more confident on the test day.
Importance for Study Abroad Aspirants
The IELTS is still one of the most recognized English language proficiency examinations for university admissions and immigration in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, amongst others. Moving to a computer-based version is in sync with the digital-based assessments in other countries.
For students aiming to study abroad, this means faster results in order to apply for universities and fulfill visa requirements.
Conclusion
The computer-based IELTS is a milestone in the history of the examination. Though the format of the test is changing, the structure of the test content, the scoring, and the recognition of the test remain the same. Candidates who are looking to book a test should start to practice in a digital environment.
