Toronto: Canada has unveiled a major education initiative offering up to $100 million in scholarships for Indian students as part of a broader effort to strengthen academic collaboration between the two countries. The announcement is linked to a new Canada-India talent and innovation strategy, aimed at expanding research partnerships and increasing access to Canadian higher education.
Under the initiative, around 200 fully funded scholarships are expected to be offered to Indian students seeking higher education opportunities in Canada. The scholarship fund is being supported through Canadian institutions including the University of Toronto which is designed to help cover tuition and other academic costs for selected candidates.
The programme also introduces a “hybrid study location” model, allowing students to begin their coursework in India before completing their degrees in Canada. Three such collaborative academic hubs are planned in India, developed through partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities. These centres are expected to focus on fields such as technology, artificial intelligence and research innovation.
In addition to scholarships and hybrid campuses, the strategy includes 13 new partnerships between Indian and Canadian universities to promote joint research, faculty exchanges and student mobility. The initiative is intended to deepen educational cooperation while expanding opportunities for Indian students to access global academic programmes and research networks.
