HITS Hosts 16th Convocation: Over 2,500 Students Graduate, Honoris Causa Degrees Conferred

Prestigious event marked by international participation, new research facilities, and student excellence

 

Chennai : The Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) held its 16th Convocation at the Bay Range Campus, celebrating the academic achievements of more than 2,500 students. Graduates from diverse disciplines—including Engineering, Architecture, Law, Management, Sciences, Liberal Arts, Health Sciences, and Hindustan Online (CODE)—were awarded degrees, alongside 88 rank holders who received special prizes for their exceptional performance.

The convocation was graced by H.E. Alem Tsehaye Woldemariam, Ambassador of Eritrea and Dean of Diplomatic Corps (India), as the Chief Guest. Guest of Honours included Mr. Rajesh Nambiar, President of NASSCOM; Dr. Abraham Varughese, Director, NSTL-DRDO; and Dr. C. Emmanuel, Director, Academics and Research, Gleneagles Health City, Chennai. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor, HITS.

During the event, the university conferred Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) upon H.E. Alem Tsehaye Woldemariam for his contributions to humanities, culture, peace, and society. Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was awarded to Mr. Rajesh Nambiar for excellence in digital transformation, to Dr. Abraham Varughese for his outstanding contributions to technology and global research, and to Dr. C. Emmanuel for his leadership in healthcare development.

Launch of Cutting-Edge Research Facilities

On this occasion, HITS inaugurated two new centres of excellence:

Cyber Physical Systems Laboratory (CPSL): Established in collaboration with iHub-AwaDH, IIT Ropar, under NM-ICPS (DST, Govt. of India). The lab will focus on AI-enabled sustainable solutions in agriculture automation, information systems, and water treatment technologies.

TANCAM Spoke Centre: Developed in partnership with Dassault Systèmes, this facility will provide students hands-on training in advanced manufacturing using the 3D EXPERIENCE platform, preparing them for global industry demands.

Student Awards and Recognitions

Special institutional awards were also presented:

  • Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Award for Best Research: Ms. Swathi N, Ph.D. Scholar, ECE
  • Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth Verghese Award for Academic Proficiency: Mr. Vishnu Priyan J, B.Tech IT (CS)
  • Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese Award for Best Outgoing Student: Ms. Shivaranjeni, B.Tech Aeronautical Engineering

Chancellor Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese congratulated the graduates and urged them to embrace lifelong learning, curiosity, and innovation. Chief Guest H.E. Alem Tsehaye Woldemariam inspired students by sharing personal experiences, emphasizing determination, passion, and compassion in their professional journeys.

Presenting the Annual Report, Vice-Chancellor (I/C) Dr. S. Ganesan highlighted the university’s achievements in 2024–25, including global collaborations, innovative infrastructure, and new academic benchmarks.

The 16th Convocation reflected HITS’s mission to nurture future-ready leaders, researchers, and innovators, while equipping graduates with the skills and vision to create a meaningful global impact.
