Kolkata: Journalism is the way to provide information to the people about activities going on around our surrounding in the form of news. History of Hindi media is around 200 hundred year old.

Celebrated as Hindi Journalism Day May 30 marks the important event in the history of Hindi Journalism. India’s first Hindi newspaper ‘Udant Martand’ was published on this day in the year 1826.

Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla in 1826 has started ‘Udant Martand’ from Calcutta (now Kolkata) as its editor and publisher. This eight pages editorial was a weekly newspaper published every Tuesday, which priced Rs. 2 annually.

This newspaper writes about the tyrannical activities of British government and East India Company’s exploitation on Indian people. It was not a political newspaper but it includes more than just anti-British propaganda, also essays, and articles, which helped in the achievement of Hindi and Hindi Journalism.

Around 500 copies of ‘Udant Martand’ were printed although its readership was negligible among the Bengali speaking people of Calcutta.

However, due to the economical issues and legal constraints faced by it through the activities of British government the newspaper is closed just after the 19 months of its publication on 4 December 1947.
