CHENNAI, July 20, 2026: The acceleration of AI demand in India necessitates the urgent upskilling of engineering graduates. The HCL Foundation and HCL GUVI have bridged this skill gap through the outcome-driven HCL Foundation AI Program. This targeted, industry-focused initiative has trained 1,070 engineering graduates in AI and Python from six Government Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu.
On July 17,, the Lilavati Auditorium at the IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai was the venue for a skilling initiative that celebrates the integration of industry AI skills with the training of engineering graduates. This event was attended by the graduates, faculty, and representatives of the Government Engineering Colleges as well as the industry partners.
Dr. Nidhi Pundhir, Director of HCL Foundation, stated that
“Eradicating inequality for access to the latest technologies is one of the building blocks toward maintaining a workforce of the future. This building block fulfills our promise to the youth to widen their opportunities and strengthen their skills in the latest digital technologies that offer openings and enhancements in their future employability.”
HCL GUVI’s innovation in the design of skilling programs is evident through this initiative. Skilling programs can integrate tailored curricula, instructor-led training, and practical implementation along with assessments and placement. This innovation in skilling focuses on employability and industry gaps rather than training program participation.

HCL Foundation believes the next-generation AI workforce will not be formed with theory alone, but with practical AI skills. This initiative empowered students to build and use AI hands. In collaboration with HCL Foundation, we are designing scalable models to meet the needs of the workforce and equip young engineers with relevant skills.
AI and Python basics with real-time projects, assessments, and mini-projects were blended with preparation for technical interviews in the 60-hour hybrid course, which consisted of 30 hours of theory and 30 hours of practical training.
Fuelled by a vision to design industry-collaborated training to prepare students for the future of work, this program was implemented in 6 Government Engineering Colleges in Trichy, Karaikudi, Vellore, Bodinayakkanur, Tirunelveli, and Salem.

In order to effectively address the AI-related skill challenges in India, the focus cannot be solely on increasing the volume of training. It is especially critical to create measurable and transparent pathways to employment from training in teaching institutions that provide significant openings to employment positions, such as government engineering colleges.
More than 700 out of 1,070 students who completed the program took the placement eligibility assessment. Most of them are currently receiving placement support, including employment opportunities and interview support. Due to continuous demand for AI-skilled professionals, integrated skilling frameworks combining industry-aligned curricula, practical training, and measurable employability outcomes are essential in developing the next generation of engineers for India.
